Labeled "on the verge of cool" by the St. Paul Pioneer Press, West Seventh offers an active and artistic scene for everyone from bicycle enthusiasts to theater geeks. Once a fur-trade path along the Mississippi, West Seventh Street is now a busy commercial street of shops and pubs, surrounded by residential streets. Families as well as a vibrant community of young artists and professionals call this area home, and they enjoy easy access to downtown St. Paul, 3 miles away, and downtown Minneapolis, 10 miles away.

Nestled between the banks of the Mississippi River and Summit Hill, an affluent neighborhood of stately Victorians, the West Seventh neighborhood has attracted waves of immigrants for over a century, and the architecture of the area reflects a quirky blend of architecturally significant working-class housing, including limestone cottages and two-story wood-frame houses haphazardly situated around converted wood-frame barns and outbuildings.

History

Fur traders and Native Americans once used the road that bears the name West Seventh as a major trading route along the Mississippi River, and as St. Paul grew, the development of this area quickly followed. In the 1860s, German immigrants moved to the area, and they established the first breweries. Waves of Polish, Czech, Irish and Scandinavian immigrants followed, and eventually, a large wave of Italians settled in the area, earning it the nickname of "Little Italy."

In this neighborhood sometimes referred to as Little Bohemia, the Landmark Center serves as the cultural hub for theater, dance and art exhibits. A range of museums in nearby downtown St. Paul, including a science museum, a history center, an art museum and a children's museum among others, provide something for everybody's tastes.
