History & Culture

With a humble beginning as the location of a railroad switch with one post office, Pearland did not even have a population of 100 in its early days. The community was named in 1893 for its abundance of pear trees. By 1898, several businesses began calling the area home. Settlers primarily used the region for its agricultural richness until oil was discovered in 1934. From that point through the mid-1960s, the population grew steadily though it remained under 16,000. Pubs and dance halls, along with other amenities, sprang up to help serve and entertain the oil field workers. Eventually, proximity to Houston became the largest driving force behind the area's expansion and continung popularity. After 1990, the number of residents in Pearland more than doubled as locals realized they could enjoy a city lifestyle in the comfort of cozy suburbs. Since its incorporation, the community has produced several professional athletes, the 1980s punk band The Judy's, as well as a few TV personalities. Houston's quirky art scene and musical inclinations have trickled down into Pearland, though the most popular museums and venues technically lie just beyond the suburb's boundaries. Locals stay busy with a year-round calendar of events, such as the Pearland Crawfish Festival and the Wine and Food Festival, both held annually.

Transportation

Residents have few public transportation options in Pearland, relying on cars to get around. Eighty-five percent of locals choose driving as their primary means of transportation, and another 10 percent carpool. Traffic tends to be heavy in most areas, making few streets walkable, but residential neighborhoods and shopping strips provide a bit of opportunity to stretch your legs. Bikers should also stick to similar areas, in addition to public parks. Taxi service is scarce in Pearland, though Uber can be used to schedule a ride. RelayRides also operates around town, if you prefer to rent your wheels rather than pay for a taxi. Parking is relatively easy to find, and most restaurants and shops have private lots. When you need to head out of town, take Highway 35 or the South Freeway to connect to the Sam Houston Parkway. From there, you can access one of several major interstates heading almost any direction.

Shopping

Residents can meet all their basic needs from chain stores and pharmacies, while the Pearland Town Center provides a retail focal point. Big-name stores such as Macy's and Coach line the streets of the plaza, and smaller boutique-style chains such as Chico's and Francesca's complete the square as a one-stop shop for apparel, shoes and accessories. All community parks welcome pets, but dogs must stay on leashes outside designated pet parks. One such area where your furry friends can roam free in the Southdown Dog Park off Countryplace Parkway.
