History

The area that is now Plymouth/Wayzata was originally inhabited by a Dakota Native American tribe. Early pioneers began to settle the area around 1852. In 1867, with the introduction of the railroad, the city began to experience exponential growth. The Wayzata Historical Society gives residents the opportunity to delve deeper into the area’s rich history.

During the winter, you can enjoy Wayzata’s annual tree-lighting ceremony at the Light up the Lake Festival. Bundle up and head out for some good old-fashioned fun riding on horse-drawn carriages, attending the tree-lighting ceremony and listening to choir concerts as you do your holiday shopping.
