Food choices in Hanover Park are varied and inviting. Several stellar burger joints, Mediterranean food establishments and Oriental cuisine outlets mean you'll never have to travel far for a tasty meal. Start your day off the right way at Oddly Correct Coffee, located south on Main Street. Discover a collection of exceptional and unusual hot coffees or opt for the iced Uwimbabazi Bourbon Rwandan in hot weather. You'll love the impeccable pour-over technique and might just leave with a house-ground bag of coffee for your own machine.

Go west to find an impressive eatery selection near the neighborhood. Stop in at Peking Chinese on Broadway to enjoy beautifully fresh, expertly prepared Chinese comfort food. Established in the 1980s, this local business built its name on high-quality dishes and generous portions. Don't miss this restaurant's legendary hot and sour soup or the fantastic crab rangoons. The outstanding Szechwan chicken providess an amazing way to add a ginger-chili kick to your lunch hour or evening.

If you're in the mood for a burger, try Beer Kitchen on the corner of Westport Road and Washington Street. Several things make this joint stand out from the crowd: an easy to find location, it has a surprisingly large selection of high-quality beers and everything you order comes with great service as standard. Reasonable prices and a fun atmosphere make this venue an even greater asset to the area. Treat your palette with the house macaroni and cheese with burnt ends or satisfy your meaty side with a big, juicy Brickhouse burger. One last thing: Truffle Parmesan fries make everything better.

Choose a platter if you're in a group, and get access to all the best cuts for less. The fabled scent of hickory barbecue greets you at the restaurant door, which is open until midnight or later every day of the week.

Add live music to your evening at Record Bar on Westport Road. For kitschy fun and drag shows in a light-hearted atmosphere, try Missie B's on West 39th.

History

Hanover Place's history began in the 1880s: Many of the brick and limestone buildings in the area date from before 1939. Hyde Park, which sits adjacent to Hanover Place, used to be a popular rest spot for pioneers heading west on the Santa Fe Trail.

Since its inception, the neighborhood has morphed into a highly creative area known for its theater and visual arts scene. The Metropolitan Ensemble Theater, located on Main Street, was founded in 2005 and showcases American Masterworks as well as modern plays for an interesting cultural mix. Both the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art sit within a mile and a half of Hanover Place.

Barnaby Evans' sculptural installation WaterFire, established on nearby Brush Creek in 2007, is a fiery annual spectacle. Jazz, blues and world music performances accompany the blazing scene, which is well worth attending.

Transportation

Hanover Place is a very walkable neighborhood. Residents can accomplish most errands on foot; a convenient option if you prefer not to keep a car. Regular bus service is available, with about five bus lines passing through or close to the area. Route 35 passes down Main Street and you can get as far as Crown Center, Mission Hills or Leawood within half an hour.

Yellow cabs provide transportation if you miss the bus or want to travel further afield. Hailing a cab is tough, but you can book a ride via telephone or text. Uber is also an option if you prefer to ride share.

Most public parking in the area can be found further north in or around the city center. However, residents usually have access to off-street parking or on-street parking outside properties. Parking rates, if applicable, tend to vary depending on the time of day and the location.

The neighborhood is located approximately a mile east of the Southwest Trafficway and a little over a mile west of Highway 71. Bike lanes incorporated into 36th Street and Warwick Boulevard make the area much safer for bicyclists.

Cost

You can get to Kansas City center in 30 minutes or less using the Metro, and it'll cost you about $1.50 or 75 cents if you qualify for a reduced rate. If you want to ride all day, you can buy an unlimited Metro pass for $3.00 or $1.50 on the reduce rate.

Gas prices hover about 18 percent lower than the national average, which could make a positive difference to your pocketbook each month. Expect to pay a little over $3 for a domestic beer on tap in the bar or just over $4 for a bottled foreign import.

Parks

Beautiful and historic Hyde Park is located to the east of Hanover Place. You can go there for free to walk, play tennis, or simply hang out. You'll find a stream and a cave complete with a natural spring, which used to provide thirsty pioneers with water when they put up camp for the night. Take your pooches to Penn Valley Park about a mile north for off-leash dog-friendly fun.

Annual events at Hyde Park include the Children's Film Festival, which is ripe with crafts, music, and more. The Hyde Park Pilgrim Run takes place around Thanksgiving: It's a family centered 5K suitable for anyone, young or old.

You'll find Walgreens and Family Dollar on Broadway and locally owned co-op Nature's Own Health Food Market on Main Street.

Most boutiques and specialty stores also thrive on Main Street. Step into Fragrance World for an eclectic collection of fine fragrance oils, perfumes, clothes and jewelry items as well as friendly, personable service. Westport Road provides another great place to find interesting things. Take a look in Westport Flea Market or Urban Mining Homewares for unique and intriguing home decor ideas.

The farmers market in nearby Westport Plaza operates from May to October and offers locally produced organic and sustainable fruits, vegetables, eggs, flowers and even live music. Head over to the corner of Westport Road and Wyoming to take part.
