  • Restaurants

As the center for business and culture, Downtown Kansas City offers a wide variety of high-end, innovative and contemporary dining options in the downtown area. The fashionable Power & Light District boasts some of the trendiest restaurants in the city.

For those who appreciate a good steak, the 801 Chophouse boasts made-to-order meats along with good company and a unique atmosphere. The locals swear by the fresh seafood. Reservations are recommended, and you can even request a private room for special occasions. Another popular spot in the Power & Light District, BRGR Kitchen & Bar specializes in gourmet burgers and has a more casual, albeit still thoroughly modern, setting. Must-try burgers include the Jucy Lucy, a burger stuffed with cheese, and the Big Burnt End, which replaces the burger patty with slow-smoked beef burnt ends topped with barbecue sauce and cheddar cheese. Other favorites include the truffle tater tots, the fried deviled eggs and the lobster grilled cheese.

In the northwest corner of Downtown Kansas City, locals hail Los Corrals as one of the best and most unique Mexican restaurants around. One of the oldest establishments in the area, the restaurant offers diners here affordably enjoyable Mexican fare in warm, colorful surroundings. The burrito and tamale spreads topped with cheese are among the most popular menu items, along with the deep-fried tacos

The Power & Light District features several nightclubs, lounges and bars. PBR Big Sky welcomes fans of Southern rock and country in a large bar that combines a modern nightclub with a down-home country feel, complete with a mechanical bull. Across town in the historic Jazz District, you can indulge in live jazz and blues from local artists at cozy Phoenix, known for its Southern and soul food cuisine that rivals the music played. Don't miss the ever-popular Saturday Jazz Brunch.

  • History

Incorporated in 1853, Kansas City grew from a settlement at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers into a rapidly growing city after the Civil War. The Downtown Loop area began to form when several highway routes were built, slowly encircling the entire Central Business District over time. Today, the loop of highways distinguishes the central business district from other parts of the downtown area.

Art and cultural attractions are a huge part of the Downtown area. Explore the Historic Garment District Museum in the northwest corner of the loop to learn about the district’s garment-producing history. See musical performances from jazz artists, choirs and pianists at the historic Folly Theater, or enjoy major national acts from comedy to dance at the Arvest Bank Theatre. Watch independent movies at the trendy Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, which provides a gourmet dine-in theater experience.

  • Transportation

You can get around on foot to most areas of Downtown Kansas City within 20 to 30 minutes, but the excellent public transportation system makes it even easier to get around. Run by the Kansas City Area Transit Authority, the Metro bus system has routes that crisscross all over the Downtown area.

Eight highways surround the downtown area; Interstates 70, 35, 670 and 29 and U.S. Routes 24, 40, 71 and 169 providing ample access to the neighborhood. Driving around can prove difficult, particularly during morning and evening weekday traffic. Consider parking in one of the many parking garages and hopping on a bus to get around. If you do wish to drive around, the city has many metered street parking spaces, which can be used free of charge in the evening and on weekends. Taxis can be flagged down easily, and Uber serves the area if you'd rather schedule your ride through a service. With dedicated biking lanes, the downtown loop proves bike-friendly. B-Cycle, the bike sharing service, provides bikes you can borrow and has bike stations spread throughout the neighborhood.

  • Shopping

The Power & Light District is the main shopping area in the neighborhood. Although it mostly has entertainment and dining venues, the Power & Light District also has a number of shops, most notably The Garment District KC, which offers stylish apparel from several popular local boutiques and designers, including Frankie & Jules and Fitness Culture. You can also shop for dazzling earrings or customized rings at Polished Edge Fine Jewelry.

Also in the Power & Light District, Cosentino’s Market provides fresh, organic produce, all natural meat products, and groceries specifically for those with special dietary needs, such as those looking for gluten-free and vegan options. Freshly prepared food options include the deli, salad, and sushi bars. Inside the bakery area, sample the ever-changing flavors at the gelato bar, or grab a cup of coffee from the coffee shop.

  • Parks

Wedged between City Hall and the U.S. District Court, Ilus W. Davis Park spans two whole blocks in the heart of Downtown Kansas City. This artistically landscaped park features a large fountain, benches and several walking paths to stroll about. Oppenstein Brothers Memorial Park, another park in the downtown area, doesn't consist of a lot of space, but it has unique features that make it well worth your time. Check out the interactive Star Disk art sculpture, which can reveal the position of hundreds of stars in the sky. The park also has plenty of trees if you want to relax sheltered from the sun.

On the northwest border, West Terrace Park and adjacent Case Park provide ample green space, sitting areas, memorials and walking paths to enjoy. The larger West Terrace Park is more family-friendly, with a baseball field, a playground and picnic tables.
