Coulwood West lies nine miles northwest of downtown Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina. Like most of the western Charlotte suburbs, Coulwood West has held onto a rural flavor, with homes for rent that seem like they're in a small town instead of a big city.

On Independence Day, the community gets together for an annual Fourth of July celebration, complete with an old-fashioned parade. Since 1962, Coulwood West families have headed for the community pool on Coulwood Drive to cool off in the summer.
