As a major economic hub for the region as well as the nation, the city is home to numerous corporate headquarters, including those of nine Fortune 500 companies. But the city’s character extends way beyond the high-rises of the central business district—much of the city’s landscape features a gorgeous mix of attractive homes, historic buildings, and lush greenery, creating an environment that overflows with southern charm and has earned Charlotte a spot on countless “Best Places to Live” lists.
Being such a big city, the options for your off-hours are practically endless, from the eclectic nightlife and entertainment of the NoDa district to the museums and theaters of Uptown to the expansive hills and forests of the outlying areas. It’s also a terrific location for sports fans, with NFL, NBA, and NASCAR events drawing huge crowds on a regular basis.

Living in Charlotte
Thanks to its spread-out layout, Charlotte is more of a driving city than one that relies on public transportation. Still, the city does offer options for those who need to get from their Charlotte apartment to work or to head Uptown to see the latest show at Ovens Auditorium or watch the Panthers play at Bank of America Stadium. The CATS bus system provides convenient routes and schedules for most areas around Uptown. The LYNX Light Rail System offers a quick way to get to Uptown and back without having to worry about dealing with traffic and finding a parking spot in the heart of the city. There are plenty of parking spaces available at each of the light rail’s stations. If you have to get to and from the more outlying areas of the city, you might have a harder time finding public transportation. Cabs are also available, although this mode of transportation isn't the cheapest.
The Queen City offers several shopping centers, including malls and retail plazas, and it isn't hard to find apartments in Charlotte that are close to at least one of them. Malls in the area include the upscale SouthPark Mall and the more affordable Carolina Place Mall in south Charlotte and the Northlake Mall in northwestern Charlotte. Large shopping plazas featuring a mix of big-name department stores and restaurants and smaller, independently owned shops and eateries include RiverGate in southwestern Charlotte, the Arboretum in south Charlotte and the more centrally located Park Road Shopping Center, Carolina Pavilion and Cotswold Village Shops. The SouthPark area also features upscale boutiques and high-end restaurants, while NoDa, or the North Davidson area near Uptown, has several trendy shops that sell clothing, art, home decor and handmade jewelry.
