  • Appleton. Appleton is located in the mid-east part of Mercer Island and was founded by settler Charles Olds in 1885. Named for its apple orchard, this charming area has narrow, winding streets and a light, open, airy vibe.
  • Downtown. Mercer Island’s Downtown is very walkable and is home to lots of apartment and condo dwellers. Mercerdale Park is an excellent walking destination, and its central business district features fine restaurants, coffee shops, a book store, specialty shops, yoga studios, hair salons, and more.
  • East Seattle. East Seattle is considered the Island's first real neighborhood, with Mercer Island’s first church, post office, hotel, store, library and restaurant. Four Landings provide excellent waterfront access for picnicking, swimming, kayaking and watching wildlife.
  • North Mercer. This waterfront neighborhood is home to multi-generation islanders and has lots of great beach access. It's close to I-90 and even has a park access on top of the I-90 "Lid" and bicycle trail access.
  • The Gold Coast. The north Mercer Gold Coast area is made up of exclusively waterfront properties. Roanoke Landing has plenty of park space, as does The Lid park over I-90. The iconic Roanoke Inn and historic VFW Hall are located in the Gold Coast area as well.

Cultural Attractions in Mercer Island, WA

Mercerdale Park, located at the southern tip of Downtown Mercer Island, offers a number of excellent annual island activities year round. They include a Spring Egg Hunt, Mostly Music in the Park, an Outdoor Film Festival, Summer Celebration, the Day of Play, and the Holiday Tree Lighting event. Mercerdale park also features a skateboarding park for young people and a Youth and Family Services Thrift Store.

Pioneer Park is a large park located south of Mercerdale that's home to a number of businesses, ranging from restaurants to grocery stores. Its green spaces offer acres of wood lands plus hiking trails for walkers and horseback trails for riders. In total, Mercer Island offers about 475 acres of parks and green spaces.

Waterside attractions on Mercer Island are plentiful and include Clarke Beach and Groveland Beach for swimming and picnicking. There's also an excellent view of Seattle's famous annual maritime event Seafair, which includes a variety of boating races and water-themed activities.

Mercer Island has two main business districts. The largest one is on the Island's north side and features dining establishments like Bennett’s Pure Food Bistro. The Roanoke Inn is a historic neighborhood pub that has been serving Mercer Islanders for generations. The Islander describes their menu as "Northwest Americana," serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a wide range of beers and wines. You can get your pizza fix at Roberto's, and you'll find numerous Asian food options around the island including Thai, teriyaki, pho and sushi.

Shopping in Mercer Island, WA

Mercer Island has two main business and shopping districts. Its largest is on the Island's north side and features eclectic dining establishments as well as numerous shops, boutiques, book stores and trendy resale shops. Island Books is a must if you're into reading books that don't require the use of a digital device.

The smaller southern shopping district is near the large Pioneer Park and features a number of restaurants and businesses. Things are a bit less quaint and rustic here, with more conventional stores, strip malls, chain restaurants and grocery stores. The Mercer Village Shopping Center offers open-air shopping plus a post office branch, gas station, Starbucks, a dry cleaner, spa, dance school and numerous restaurants.
