Living in Home Park

History

-

Home Park was developed in 1901 to house workers from the nearby Atlantic Steel Mill, which once occupied the land where Atlantic Station stands today. That industrial origin gave the neighborhood its grid layout and modest, early 20th-century residential architecture, much of which is still visible on streets north of 10th Street. The compact blocks and older bungalow-style homes offer a noticeable contrast to the taller, newer construction rising in surrounding areas.

When Atlantic Station was built on the former mill site in the early 2000s, the transformation of that land sparked renewed investment in Home Park as well. The commercial strip along Howell Mill Road picked up new restaurants, art galleries, and design firms over time. Georgia Tech's continued expansion also shaped the neighborhood physically, with the university purchasing blocks of residential property along its northern edge over the decades.

Restaurants

-

The Home Park area has a solid range of dining options spread across the Howell Mill Road corridor and the nearby Atlantic Station development. You'll find casual spots serving Southern comfort food alongside places focused on wood-fired pizza, tacos, ramen, and craft burgers. The Atlantic Station dining district, located just north of the neighborhood, adds a broader mix of sit-down restaurants and quick-service options. The Varsity, a landmark restaurant that has operated in Atlanta since 1928, is located nearby on North Avenue and remains one of the city's most recognizable spots for hot dogs, chili dogs, and onion rings.

Transportation

-

Home Park is moderately walkable, with a walk score of 70 and a transit score of 70. The neighborhood sits immediately west of the I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector, giving drivers direct access to Downtown Atlanta, Buckhead, and points beyond. Northside Drive, Techwood Drive, and 10th Street serve as the main surface roads connecting the area to the rest of Midtown. MARTA bus routes run along several nearby corridors, and Atlantic Station operates a free shuttle to the Arts Center MARTA rail station, one of the closest rail access points to the neighborhood. The 17th Street bridge over the Downtown Connector links Home Park directly to Atlantic Station on foot or by bike. Bike infrastructure is present but limited, with a bike score of 50.

Parks

-

Home Park has two public parks within its boundaries. The neighborhood's namesake park is a 1.8-acre green space established in 1958 that includes a playground and basketball court. Holly Street Park, a second parcel, was acquired in 2017 and is slated for future development into a full public park. Piedmont Park, one of Atlanta's largest green spaces at 189 acres, is accessible just east of the neighborhood in Midtown. The Atlanta Botanical Garden, which sits adjacent to Piedmont Park, offers formal gardens, a conservatory, and specialty garden areas. For larger outdoor escapes, Stone Mountain Park is located roughly 20 miles east of Home Park.

Cost

-

Average rent in Home Park ranges from approximately $1,290 per month for a studio to around $1,735 for a three-bedroom unit. One-bedroom apartments average around $1,325 per month, while two-bedroom units come in near $1,518. The neighborhood's proximity to Georgia Tech and Midtown's major employers makes it a consistently active rental market. Atlanta's broader economy is anchored by major corporate headquarters including Delta Air Lines, The Coca-Cola Company, and UPS, contributing to steady employment across the metro area.

Shopping

-

The commercial district on the west side of Home Park, running along Howell Mill Road toward Marietta Street and Brady Avenue, includes a mix of restaurants, design firms, art galleries, and neighborhood retail. Atlantic Station, directly to the north, functions as a large outdoor shopping and entertainment district with national retailers, a Target, a Publix grocery store, and a movie theater. Ponce City Market, located in the historic Sears, Roebuck and Company building in the Old Fourth Ward, is a short drive east and offers a well-established mix of local vendors, boutiques, and food stalls. Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza in Buckhead are also easily reachable from Home Park for a wider range of retail options.

Highlights

-

Home Park offers direct access to Georgia Tech, Midtown Atlanta, and the shops and dining of Atlantic Station, all in a compact, centrally located neighborhood with a range of rental options from garden apartments to townhomes.
