Finding Apartments for Rent in Irvine, CA
According to the City of Irvine, there is evidence that prehistoric man lived in what is now Irvine 12,000 to 18,000 years ago and that Gabrielino Indians moved into the area 2000 years ago. James Irvine, a sheep rancher, acquired 110,000 acres of land in 1878. He died in 1886 and in 1893 James Irvine, Jr. came into full possession of the land. James Irvine, Jr. incorporated the land into The Irvine Company in 1894 and began the switch from sheep ranching to field crops, citrus orchards and olive orchards.
In the 20th century, some of The Irvine Company land was sold to the federal government for two Marine Corps air facilities and some was sold to the state of California for the creation of a new university campus — University of California, Irvine (UCI). A master plan was developed which called for residential and recreational areas, commercial and industrial zones and greenbelts to surround the university.
