Founded as a school for women in 1839, Framingham State University has grown to become one of the top regional universities in the north. FSU is located about 20 miles southwest of Boston in Framingham, a picturesque and historic town settled in 1647. The campus covers 143 acres and offers degree programs in 31 majors, with 25 graduate programs. Popular majors include Marketing, Social Sciences, Psychology, Business, and Management. Notable alumni include Christa McAuliffe, the teacher killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. The Christa Corrigan McAuliffe Center for Education and Teaching Excellence on campus was named in her honor. Framingham is a terrific town with plenty to offer, from historic sites to museums and theaters. The town also offers an extensive parks system that includes two state parks: Callahan and Cochituate. Notable locations include Garden in the Woods, Lake Cochituate and its beaches, Danforth Museum, the Performing Arts Center of Metrowest, and the historic Pike Haven Homestead (built in 1693). Find an apartment off Worcester Road east of the university to be closer to Natick Mall and Lake Cochituate. FSU is located south of High Street, with Main Street to the east and Maynard Road and Church Street to the west.
