History

-

Midtown's built environment reflects well over a century of growth. The Fox Theatre, a 1929 landmark on Peachtree Street featuring Moorish and Egyptian Revival architecture, still hosts Broadway touring productions, concerts, and events today. It anchors the Fox Theatre Historic District, which also includes the Georgian Terrace Hotel from 1911 and several other early-20th-century structures, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Walking along that stretch of Peachtree, you can see how much architectural history has been preserved alongside the neighborhood's newer towers.

The Historic Midtown district, east of Piedmont Avenue, offers a completely different look, with bungalows and Queen Anne-style homes that date back to the area's first residential boom. The Margaret Mitchell House, also on the National Register of Historic Places, is where the author wrote Gone with the Wind and remains open to visitors today. Ivy Hall, the restored 1880s Peters House on North Avenue, adds to the collection of historic properties that give Central Midtown a depth you don't often find in a high-density urban neighborhood.

Restaurants

-

Central Midtown has one of the strongest restaurant scenes in Atlanta, with options that range from quick lunches near the office towers to sit-down dinners before a show at the Fox. The area draws a wide variety of cuisines, including Italian, Japanese, American Southern, wood-fired pizza, and Spanish tapas. Peachtree Street and the surrounding side streets have seen consistent growth in the dining scene, fueled in part by the large daytime workforce and proximity to the Georgia Tech campus.

The Varsity, the large drive-in restaurant that opened in 1928 just outside the neighborhood near North Avenue, is one of Atlanta's most recognizable institutions and has been serving hot dogs, chili dogs, and onion rings for nearly a century. Beyond longstanding spots, the neighborhood regularly attracts new restaurants drawn to foot traffic from Piedmont Park, the Woodruff Arts Center, and the dense residential base along West Peachtree and 10th Street.

Transportation

-

Central Midtown is served by three MARTA rail stations: North Avenue, Midtown, and Arts Center, all on the Red and Gold lines that connect directly to Downtown Atlanta, Buckhead, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. MARTA also operates bus routes throughout the district, and a free shuttle connects the Arts Center station to Atlantic Station. Riders heading to Georgia Tech can access a free daytime shuttle from the Midtown station.

For those who prefer two wheels, the neighborhood has dedicated bike lanes and connects to the Atlanta BeltLine, giving cyclists a path to neighborhoods throughout the city. The major north-south corridors of Peachtree Street and West Peachtree Street run directly through Central Midtown, while I-85 and I-75 are accessible nearby via the Downtown Connector. With strong walk and transit scores, most residents here rely on foot travel and public transit for day-to-day needs.
