Just one subway stop from Midtown Manhattan and the Upper East Side, Long Island City sits along the East River with spectacular views of the city skyline. Since it once served as a manufacturing hub, a variety of former industrial buildings now house historic lofts. Luxury condos also dominate the landscape, along with a smattering of low-rise apartment buildings and single-family houses, providing a unique mix of architecture to suit any renter’s lifestyle. Living in this Queens neighborhood will put you close to not only Manhattan, but also trendy neighborhoods like Williamsburg in Brooklyn.
If you're planning to move to Long Island City, you might be wondering what the cost of living is, and how it compares to the rest of New York. Like much of NYC, the cost of living in Long Island City is high — roughly 80 percent higher than the national average. Those fantastic views and being less than 10 minutes from Manhattan by subway come at a cost.

Property Ratings at The Forge
Pros: - Staff is very nice and professional - The building is cool and shiny and units have a great floorplan with floor to ceiling windows (now check the cons) - The pool and gym are nice additions - Location is great Cons: - They have 3 elevators for 37 floors, ~8 units per floors. Usually only 2/3 elevators actually work. You end up waiting a long time for elevators. This is extremely frustrating as they are always down, under construction, or just slow. Poor building planning and no easy fix. - The AC units are pre-programmed and reset frequently to 74 degrees (F), making you constantly reset it and wake up sweating in the middle of the night. If you like temperature control in your apartment, this isn't the place for you. - Showers are tough to regulate temperatures and once hot, they go straight back to freezing with no in between. They also take 10-15 minutes to actually heat up. - Every handle, surface, and door has THE sharpest edges. This aspect of the apartment I do not understand. If a grown, 28 year-old, man cuts himself imagine what will happen with a kid. - Pool and gym come at an additional cost and are filled with loud groups and noisy kids. Not the biggest issue but not very relaxing. Also, pool has way too many chemicals in it (girlfriend's bathing suit was completely bleached and ruined) - Floor to ceiling windows have never been cleaned and are absolutely filthy. Windows don't open wide enough to allow tenant to clean, so they remain gross. Overall: I like the building. However, these are the things I wish I knew before moving in so that I could reevaluate costs and other options.
