Tempe’s major claim to fame is the main campus of Arizona State University. More than fifty thousand students attend classes here, and the university’s impact on the local culture cannot be overstated. In addition to being the city’s largest employer, ASU serves as the cultural hub for Tempe, hosting guest speakers, art and history exhibits, concerts, and other events that draw students and non-students alike. Most of the nightlife and entertainment options in town are clustered near the ASU campus on the north side of town, with the areas further south mostly occupied by quiet suburban neighborhoods.

Just across the river from campus sits the massive Papago Park, a sprawling facility that provides access to the rugged beauty of the desert via hiking and bike trails, plus popular golf courses, a zoo, and a cultural center. In addition to ASU Sun Devil sports, Tempe is also home to the spring training facilities for the Los Angeles Angels. Partly due to the high population of college students, rentals in Tempe tend to be very affordable, making it an attractive community for commuters who work elsewhere in the Phoenix area.

In Tempe, you can find a handful of shops all down one street. Mill Ave is Tempe’s largest attraction. The Centerpoint on Mill is full of sidewalk cafes, shops, bars, and a lot of energy. You can find things like upscale cigars and gourmet popcorn six days a week. Next you have Arizona Mills, the largest shopping mall in Tempe. Arizona Mills has nationwide retail chains such as GNC, Hot Topic, Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th, Nine West, and Neiman Marcus. This mall stands apart from other AZ malls because it has outlets located in the mall as well as premier shopping boutiques. It is also home to SEA LIFE, an indoor aquarium.

If you are just moving to Tempe and need new furniture without paying an arm and a leg, try IKEA Home Furnishings. IKEA Tempe is the only IKEA store in Arizona. They sell furnishings for the entire house, from the kitchen to down to the den. You can expect to find low prices and modern style furniture with the option of delivery and set-up.

Restaurants

You will see a restaurant on nearly every street corner in Tempe. There are mom and pop shops and world-class dining all within feet of each other. Tempe is home to Joe’s Crab Shack, Big Bang Dueling Piano Bar, Bison Witches Bar, Café Boa, Cabana Bar & Grill, and several chains such as Applebees and Claim Jumper. You can find several western style restaurants along the outskirts of 5th Ave. ASU has small strips of places to eat that are inexpensive and locals can be seen walking along the row of lunch spots, even if they are not a college student.
