Restaurants

Dining options around North Castle Hills consist of some of San Antonio's most popular fine dining spots to hidden family owned gems. La Fogata in southern Castle Hills stands out as one of San Antonio's highest-rated Mexican food restaurants, and foodies pay a premium for the potent margaritas.

For a more relaxed Mexican food experience, visit Pam's Patio Kitchen on Wurzbach Road. Chicken tinga tacos share the eclectic menu with American fare, such as the grilled Reuben sandwich and spinach strawberry pecan salad, but the mango salsa remains a favorite. The refreshingly tangy strawberry lemonade pairs perfectly with any entrée, especially while you dine on the dog-friendly outdoor patio.

One-half mile north on Wurzbach Road sits Green Vegetarian Cuisine, a favorite local spot for a light and healthy meal. The tasty food attracts both vegetarians and meat-lovers, with favorite entrées including portabella steak with caramelized onions and eggplant Parmesan served over spaghetti. Be sure to save room for the specialty vegan cupcakes.

Neighborhood bars surround the North Castle Hills area, providing casual, relaxed entertainment options for a night out with friends. The expansive Retox Bar on Patricia Drive houses a dance floor, booths, bar seating and an outdoor patio for multiple areas to socialize. The bar occasionally hosts live music as well.

Travel around the corner on West Avenue to Hidden Tavern, where you can watch a football game on Sunday or join in on karaoke. Cheap drinks and friendly bartenders attract a regular crowd, and the dive bar makes a great place to wind down and enjoy a few drinks.

History

Native American tribes occupied the Castle Hills area until the late 1800s. Arrowheads still unearth as evidence of the early inhabitants as flint rock once abounded in this area. In the early 1900s, the area became a commercial gravel pit, but was eventually filled in and leveled. Families settled the area in the 1920s, drawn by its attractive water supply from Olmos Creek. These families joined together and called the area “Castle Hills” because of a notable family’s house atop a hill. The city incorporated in 1951, and North Castle Hills grew as an extension of the city.

Castle Hills houses Gallery Nord a few miles south of the North Castle Hills neighborhood. Locals visit for a taste of art outside San Antonio’s downtown museum district. The quiet gallery displays contemporary art for viewing and purchase.

The Castle Hills community gathers annually for a Fourth of July celebration and during National Night Out.

Transportation

North Castle Hills lies tucked in the middle of major highway loops around San Antonio, and residents have easy access to them via thoroughfares such as Wurzbach Parkway. Locals rely primarily on personal cars for commuting to work and traveling to and from the neighborhood when running errands. To catch the metro bus, walk a half-mile from the neighborhood to the nearest bus stop. A trip downtown takes around one hour and 10 minutes. The residential-heavy neighborhood proves pedestrian and bike-friendly, but those walks and bike rides typically serve leisure purposes rather than as a primary mode of transportation. Cabs don't frequently visit the neighborhood, so you'll have to request a ride in advance. Call Universal Taxi or request an Uber using your smartphone to schedule a ride.

Cost

North Castle Hills ranks among the highly desirable suburban areas in San Antonio, and residents willingly pay the premium to enjoy its amenities. The cost of living sits about 16 percent higher than San Antonio overall, yet housing costs remain affordable. A one-bedroom apartment averages about $694 per month. Dining and entertainment options range from fancy to casual, but locals still only pay about $3.50 for a domestic beer. Consistent with Texas’ overall gas prices, the pumps around North Castle Hills show prices around 16 percent lower than the national average. If you prefer public transit, a trip downtown costs $1.20 per ride.

Shopping

North Castle Hills residents enjoy easy access to a wide range of nearby shopping, from local vintage stores to mainstream malls. North Star Mall sits just 4 miles south on Loop 410 and provides a one-stop shopping destination, featuring familiar stores like Gap and Macy’s. Head 9 miles north to Loop 1604 and stroll through San Antonio’s premier open-air shopping center, The Shops at La Cantera, with upscale stores such as Neiman Marcus and Burberry.

To get away from the hustle and bustle of shopping mall crowds, head to The Alley on Bitters to casually stroll through the unique artisan shops sitting side-by-side on what used to be a dairy farm. The rustic charm of the collection of boutiques draws locals and visitors alike, all on their own hunts for unique hidden gems. While there, stop in Back Alley Antiques for a selection of 19th- and 20th-century furnishings as well as vintage jewelry and quilts. The beautifully decorated store provides inspiration to even the novice antique shopper. Flip through the vinyl and magazine collections for a few rare treasures.

After browsing the vintage collectibles, head to Originals Beads & Gems to create something new. The bead store and jewelry design center allows you to dream up that perfect necklace or get hands-on and craft a piece of jewelry yourself. Check out its jewelry-making classes too for even more techniques and inspiration.

With HEB located about a mile away on Military Highway, North Castle Hills residents quickly check off grocery shopping on their to-do lists. Though not the largest HEB in San Antonio, the shelves stay well-stocked with fresh goods and locals appreciate the convenience of the ready-made selections from the café as well.

On Friday mornings, locals head to San Antonio Farmers Market on Wurzbach Road just a few minutes east of North Castle Hills. Stock up on fresh organic fruits and veggies, just in time to cook those special weekend recipes.

Parks

North Castle Hills sits adjacent to Phil Hardberger Park, one of San Antonio’s premier parks. The 311-acre green space provides entertainment for nature lovers and the exercise-centric as well as families. Free to all visitors, this park features dog parks and playgrounds in specially designated areas. Interact with plants and animals at the Ecology Center or learn about sustainable technology in the Salado Outdoor Classroom. Fitness in the Park sessions cater to various intensity levels, ranging from boot camp-style exercises to stroller-friendly workouts. Join in on a nature walk to sightsee local wildlife and vegetation up close. Runners and bikers enjoy the trails as well for a faster-paced tour.

Along with regular events, Phil Hardberger Park hosts Star Party, where local astronomers set up telescopes in the field to view the constellations without the obstruction of city lights.
