As far as Austin neighborhoods go, South Lamar is an often overlooked option. It’s no wonder why, since it’s wedged between the wildly popular South Congress neighborhood and the elegantly historic Barton Hills. But South Lamar offers a subtle beauty all its own. It is home to top-rated restaurants, terrific shops, and the legendary Broken Spoke, a dance hall where toes have tapped since 1964. This venue has played host to a variety of country music legends when they were just starting out, including George Strait and the Dixie Chicks.
South Lamar sits just across the Colorado River from Downtown Austin, spanning about three square miles. The neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, South Lamar Boulevard, is lined with a broad range of shops and restaurants, so find your South Lamar apartment near this strip if you enjoy dining out frequently or like to be a short distance from shopping.
The Barton Creek Greenbelt is located just outside South Lamar, offering terrific hiking trails as well as rock climbing, swimming, and bicycling. On the northwest end of the neighborhood, Zilker Metropolitan Park features a natural, spring-fed pool for swimming, the Zilker Botanical Gardens, the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum, and the Austin Nature and Science Center. This is also the location of the Zilker Park Kite Festival held every March, and the Austin City Limits Music Festival held each October.

My biggest complaint is the cleanliness of the surrounding nature. I went canoeing a few weeks and and the water was littered with so much trash I wouldn't ever want to swim in it. It was truly sad.

The weather here is generally warm which I enjoy but it does get rather muggy. My biggest complaint is that there are not four real seasons. It's so hot in the summer and then goes straight to as cold as it's gonna get and vice versa. There is no great spring and fall which is sad.
