As one of the last of the six historic Houston wards, the Sixth Ward neighborhood maintains old-time charm but embraces contemporary lifestyles. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, the Sixth Ward has the largest amount of Victorian houses in the city. There are industrial-chic high-rise apartments and modern townhomes available for rent as well.
Today, the neighborhood is known for its trendy local-roast coffee shops, indie artist studios and galleries, craft breweries, low-key cocktail bars, and diverse eateries with colorful, whimsical murals on the sides of buildings. The Sixth Ward also offers convenient access to shopping, with two small retail centers offering department and grocery stores in the northwest part of the neighborhood.
Another draw to the community is its prime location. The Sixth Ward is close to popular Buffalo Bayou Park and Eleanor Tinsley Park, which offer skyline views, dazzling gardens, public art, and more. Access to Interstate 10 and 45 make getting to downtown Houston easy. In fact, a trip to downtown can take as little as 10 minutes.
As of April 2025, the average apartment rent in Sixth Ward is $1,489 for a studio, $1,823 for one bedroom, $2,427 for two bedrooms, and $1,976 for three bedrooms. Apartment rent in Sixth Ward has increased by 1.7% in the past year.
