Area Guide
In the mid-1800s, yellow fever and cholera epidemics ravaged New Orleans, so a group of doctors formed a medical school to help combat the diseases. That school is now Tulane University, one of the nation's most-respected research universities. Tulane still has civil service at its core -- it even requires students to participate in community service. Tulane is a "most-selective" private school with an acceptance rate at just about 31 percent. Considered one of the best universities in the country, Tulane offers about 70 degree programs in 10 colleges. The most popular majors include Biomedical Sciences, Health Professions, Social Sciences, and Business. The Tulane Green Wave are part of NCAA Division I as members of the American Athletic Conference. The Green Wave football team plays at Yulman Stadium, the basketball team at Devlin Fieldhouse, and the baseball team at Turchin Stadium. Tulane University is located in the Uptown/Carrollton neighborhood of New Orleans, near the Mississippi River and about a block north of Audubon Park. To live near the park, look along Saint Charles Avenue near Loyola University. This famous roadway features bike lanes and the streetcar line, providing fast access to the nearby French Quarter. To live near Yulman Stadium and Turchin Stadium, look for apartments along South Claiborne Avenue, or look for rentals along Ben Weiner Drive or Audubon Boulevard.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
