Finding Apartments for Rent in Gretna, LA
The City of Gretna, Louisiana is a suburb of New Orleans. On a map, Gretna clearly lies to the south of New Orleans and on the opposite bank of the Mississippi River. But locally, everyone takes their bearings from the river, and however much the river twists and turns, its banks are always “east” and “west.” As residents of Gretna and New Orleans say, Gretna is “on the Westbank.”
Broadly speaking, for apartment living in Gretna, there are two ways to play, “incorporated Gretna” and “Timberlane,” to put it one way, or “express” and “golf,” to put it another. Living in incorporated Gretna, residents are close to commerce and have convenient access to the rest of the Westbank and to downtown New Orleans via the Westbank Expressway and the Crescent City Connection. Farther to the south, outside of Gretna’s city limits and near the edge of the New Orleans’s metropolitan area, residents are in golf country, surrounded by the Timberlane Country Club, Stonebridge Golf Club, and Bayou Barriere Golf Club.

The Gretna Economic Development Association presents the Gretna Heritage Festival on October 3-5, 2014, featuring, music, food, and vendor and exhibitor booths, covering some twenty-five blocks of the city, in all. The festival’s producers have booked sixty musical acts for the festival’s six stages, including performances by Earth Wind & Fire, The Molly Ringwalds, and Dash Rip Rock on Friday; Chicago, the Subdudes, and the Treme Brass Band on Saturday; and ZZ Top, the Ben Miller Band, Tab Benoit, and Bag of Donuts on Sunday. We count offerings from thirty-five different food providers, including barbecue, seafood, chili, sandwiches (including po’boys and muffulettas), jambalaya, hamburgers, hot tamales, and many different desserts and snacks.
In nearby New Orleans, the spring and fall seasons are good times to see the Audubon Zoo, while the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and the Audubon Insectarium, being indoors, are a good idea at any time of the year. Art lovers should check out the New Orleans Museum of Art both for its wide-ranging collection, including Louisiana art of the nineteenth century through the twenty-first, and for the exhibitions it produces several times each year. History buffs can plan to spend a day or more at the large and growing National WWII Museum.
