In the mid-1800s, yellow fever and cholera epidemics ravaged New Orleans, so a group of doctors formed a medical school to help combat the diseases. That school is now Tulane University, one of the nation's most-respected research universities. Tulane still has civil service at its core -- it even requires students to participate in community service.

Tulane University is located in the Uptown/Carrollton neighborhood of New Orleans, near the Mississippi River and about a block north of Audubon Park. To live near the park, look along Saint Charles Avenue near Loyola University. This famous roadway features bike lanes and the streetcar line, providing fast access to the nearby French Quarter.
