Purposefully built on a network of man-made waterways and residential islands, Discovery Bay took shape during the 1970s and 1980s with a clear intention: incorporate water into everday life and give residents easy access to the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. This created a kind of recreational infrastructure that is found in few other cities.

The southeast quadrant was set aside for the Discovery Bay Country Club's 18-hole golf course, a feature that still defines that corner of the community today. Over the decades, the city has gradually expanded what began as a purely waterfront retreat into a broader suburban community while keeping the original canal district as its defining character.

Dining within Discovery Bay is intentionally low-key, matching the relaxed pace of the community. DB Steakhouse, a sports bar and grill, serves as the go-to casual spot where residents catch a game and settle in for a hearty meal. For a wider range of cuisines, most residents make the short trip to Brentwood, nine miles to the west, where the dining scene offers far more variety. The community is car-dependent by design, with California State Route 4 running along its southern edge as the primary artery connecting residents to the wider region. Diablo and takes longer than the straight-line distance suggests.

Running everyday errands stays manageable without leaving the immediate area. Sandy Cove Shopping Center, about three miles from the community's core, anchors grocery needs with a Safeway and adds a CVS for household essentials. Discovery Bay Shopping Center, less than a mile away, covers convenience stops including a nail salon and gas station. A cluster of service businesses along Discovery Bay Boulevard rounds out the local options. For larger retail variety, Brentwood is the natural destination at nine miles west.
