Living in Buckhead Forest

History

-

Buckhead takes its name from a story involving Henry Irby, who purchased land and set up a store and tavern at the crossroads of Peachtree, Roswell, and West Paces Ferry roads in 1838. The area grew into a destination for grand estates and stately homes, and that architectural legacy is still visible throughout the district today. Portions of Buckhead retain their old tree-canopied residential character, with historic homes set on generous lots that give the area a look and feel uncommon in most Atlanta neighborhoods.

The Buckhead Heritage Society actively works to preserve the area's architectural history, and the Atlanta History Center, located on West Paces Ferry Road, is one of the region's most respected history museums. It includes the 1928 Swan House, a Renaissance Revival mansion that still stands on the museum's grounds, along with formal gardens and rotating exhibits on Atlanta and the surrounding region.

Restaurants

-

Buckhead Forest sits right on the edge of one of Atlanta's most food-forward areas. The broader Buckhead neighborhood is home to a dense stretch of restaurants along Peachtree Road and in Buckhead Village, covering everything from Southern barbecue and Lowcountry cooking to Italian, French, Japanese, and contemporary American cuisine. Weekend brunch spots stay busy along this corridor, and there's no shortage of places for a casual weeknight meal or a more involved dining experience.

The area is also within easy reach of the Buckhead Village District, where newer restaurant concepts sit alongside long-established dining institutions. Atlanta has a strong food festival culture, including Taste of Atlanta, an annual event that draws chefs and restaurants from across the city.

Transportation

-

Getting around from Buckhead Forest is straightforward for drivers. Peachtree Road is the neighborhood's primary artery, connecting residents south into Midtown and Downtown Atlanta. Roswell Road and Piedmont Road offer additional routes heading north and east. Georgia State Route 400 runs just to the east and links into Interstate 285, making it easy to reach other parts of metro Atlanta. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is roughly 20 to 25 minutes south via I-85 or I-75, depending on traffic.

MARTA serves the broader Buckhead area with three stations on the Red and Gold lines: Buckhead station, Lenox station, and Lindbergh Center, all within a short drive or reasonable walk from Buckhead Forest. A free circulator bus called the Buc (Buckhead Uptown Connection) stops at all three stations and makes getting around the district easier without a car. PATH400 is a multi-use trail running through the heart of Buckhead along a 5.2-mile corridor, connecting parks, offices, and retail areas and giving walkers and cyclists a dedicated off-road option.
