Fairdale was its own census-designated place in southern Jefferson County until 2003 when it became an annexed part of Louisville. Locals enjoy a number of nearby parks and a low cost of living, especially in regard to housing prices. The neighborhood typically attracts blue-collar workers seeking convenience to the area's interstates, proximity to open land and a good mixture of residential and commercial development.

Locals craving Mexican cuisine head north on National Turnpike to La Riviera Maya. This low-key restaurant serves great-tasting tortas, tacos and gorditas. The community of Fairdale, originally called Newtown until the city itself dissolved in the early 1800s, initially attracted salt mine workers.
