They avoid most city traffic by going through the Lincoln tunnel from Manhattan into New Jersey. The trip takes just over 3 hours each way and costs about $35 round trip. Mega Bus has a station in the Amtrak parking lot in Albany. While it’s easy enough to do a round trip to NYC in a single day, it’s much more relaxing to spend at least one night there.
