Located just two miles north of Coney Island and stretches of sand along Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach, Midwood is one of Brooklyn's much-loved -- and surprisingly lesser known -- neighborhoods. In some ways, it's traditional New York: extremely walkable, bicycle-friendly, and near mass transit. It features tall, brick buildings with wrought-iron fire escapes, and the wide sidewalks lead past friendly neighborhood bakeries, delis, and boutiques. But in other ways, it feels much more suburban, with its tree-filled neighborhoods, elegant single-family homes, and a historic shopping district filled with locally-owned businesses.
Subway stations are scattered throughout Midwood and provide a 45-minute ride to Manhattan. Residents can drive south on Ocean Parkway to enjoy a day at the beach, and students appreciate easy access to Brooklyn College, set just outside of Midwood. This diverse melting pot provides a little bit of everything when searching for a restaurant, shop, or grocer.

Property Ratings at The Elmray
This is a large, post-war apartment building in Midwood, a family-friendly neighborhood in South Brooklyn. The apartments are quite large for the price that you pay (which is reasonable in itself compared to current Brooklyn rents), and many get updated with new kitchen cabinets and appliances after old tenants move out. (That's not the case for every apartment though). They have nice wood floors, plenty of closets (my one-bedroom apartment has four) and in many cases, decent-sized kitchens that are separated from the other rooms. One of the minor drawbacks is that some apartments only have windows facing the courtyard, so the views are not exactly breathtaking. But the building is well-maintained and the building staff is usually easily reachable and prompt to respond to requests for service. There is a laundry on the premises, an underground garage (for an additional fee) and plenty of grocery stores, pharmacies, delis and small restaurants around. The subway station is only four blocks away. This is not a hip neighborhood by any means as it's about a 45-minute subway ride away from Manhattan, but it's lively due to a large number of families living here, diverse and safe. If I had to make the decision to rent in this building again, I would.
