The central area of Orange County east of Interstate 5 includes the cities of Orange, Tustin, downtown Anaheim and the Anaheim Hills neighborhood. Tree-lined streets, single-family homes, apartment buildings and various businesses represent the defining characteristics of Anaheim, Tustin and Orange. Sitting between State Routes 91 and I-55, the Anaheim Hills area holds many upscale homes, hiking trails and golf courses. The borders of central Orange County east of I-5 are defined by a gathering of cities to the north, including Fullerton, Placentia and Yorba Linda. To the east you will find Loma Ridge, Limestone Canyon Regional Park and Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. While to the south sits Lake Forest and Irvine. The western border of the region includes I-5, which splits Orange County in two. When traveling to any particular city, the central point of this area lies roughly 11 miles to the east of Tustin and Orange, CA. Additionally, the area lies about 14 miles to the south of Anaheim Hills.

You have plenty of local restaurants and nightspots to hit within the central OC area, especially in Orange, Tustin or Anaheim Hills. One area that includes a lot of restaurants to choose from, such as American, Italian and Asian fare, lies along Chapman Avenue in the City of Orange. For a local's favorite in Orange, try Gabbi's Mexican Kitchen. Serving a selection of popular Mexican dishes, Gabbi takes a unique approach to Old World recipe preparation. Some menu items include Pork Osso Bucco Chile Verde, Butternut Squash & Rajas and Chile Colorado Short Rib. If you seek food made with fresh produce, visit Rutabegorz in Tustin. Once there, order the vegetarian lasagna for the ultimate taste-bud sensation. Served with toast and a tomato on top, this simple dish combines vegetables, pasta and a one-of-a-kind marinara sauce. Combining bacon, burgers and beer, Slater's 50/50 brings a great dining experience to its patrons. Sample its Thai sriracha chicken wings, or dive into one of the signature burgers, including the 50/50, which combines a beef patty, pepper jack cheese, avocado and its special chipotle adobe mayo and brioche, all topped with an egg sunny side up. Wash it all down with one of its wide selection of beverages, including local, import and domestic beers. For a taste of the local nightlife scene, head to Streamliner Lounge, a classy bar and restaurant housed in an old train depot. Sip on a blueberry mojito while listening to local musicians ranging from blues to classic big band. While you're there, be sure to sample the famous lobster mac and cheese. For more risque fun, visit The Pump Room in Orange. A bikini dive bar, the waitresses and bartender serve you in bikinis. So, sit back, relax and enjoy a few drinks. The Juke Joint in northwest Anaheim brings live music to the area, including a variety of talent ranging from popular acts to local bands. History

Originally Native American land, the area within central Orange County saw a heavy influx of U.S. servicemen and women following World War II. Cities, such as Orange, continued to grow through annexation, with Orange eventually establishing a boundary out to Tustin Lake in the east part of the county. Tustin also came to prominence during this time period, serving as home to three military bases in the area, though these have long closed. Relatively new when compared to surrounding areas, Anaheim Hills only came into its own starting in the 1970s. These three areas in particular make up a large portion of the central OC area east of I-5. The Discovery Science Center in Orange features a selection of exhibits, including the opportunity to feel the power of a real rocket launch, a two-story dinosaur and a variety of annual events for the entire family.

Transportation

While you can perform some of your errands on foot within many of the cities in the central Orange County area, many require the use of a vehicle. You can likewise find bike lanes within the city limits of many area cities. Some other options include riding Orange County Transit Authority (OCTA) or Riverside Transportation Authority (RTA) buses. The Metrolink train service also travels throughout the area, linking the central OC area to Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego. Hailing a taxi requires you to call a local service or visit a cab stall at a local hotel. Additionally, you can use a mobile device to order a taxi from online service Uber, which operates in the area. Parking on area streets is usually free, though most city ordinances restrict this usage to 72 hours at a time. Afterwards you must move the vehicle a certain distance before parking again. The cost of parking in city lots should not cost that much, with most having a daily maximum for all-day parking. When you do drive your vehicle around the area and farther, access to highways and expressways remains relatively easy, including the nearby SR-91, SR-55, SR-57 and I-5. These roadways give you almost unlimited access to the Orange County area, as well as cities further afield, such as Los Angeles and San Diego.

Cost

The cost of living in the central Orange County area east of I-5 runs a little bit above average when compared to surrounding areas of California. Some examples of this higher cost include median rent for a one-bedroom residence sitting at $1,265, a bottle of beer at a local bar costing between $3 and $4 and a one-way ride on area public transport costing $2. The price of gasoline can fluctuate depending on the city you buy it in. A gallon of gas in Orange costs about 16 percent higher than the national average, while the price in Tustin sits at 18 percent higher.

Shopping

One area central shopping location, Westfield MainPlace, sits between Tustin and Orange. This mall has a variety of shops and retailers to fit a variety of needs, including clothing, bath and body, and more. When searching for specific shops geared toward the discerning shopper, look no further than Laurenly Boutique in Orange. This retailer features a variety of fashionable and flirty clothing, accessories and decor. The Spotted Moth, also in Orange has a wide range of shirts, lingerie and accessories, as well as items for the kids and the home. When seeking area grocery stores, you have a large variety to choose from, including Ralph’s, Stater Brothers and Albertsons. Shop at these area stores for all of your grocery and personal item needs. Or, you can visit the Orange Home Grown Farmers’ and Artisan Market for fresh produce, herbs and fruit.

Parks

Area parks include a long list of locations that cater to families and pets. One such area park, Hart Park, brings a long list of amenities to the OC public. Some of these features include a large swimming pool open to the public, two play areas for the kids and reservable picnic areas. In the summer, enjoy Concerts in the park at the amphitheatre at this location. Free to the public, this concert series features a wide range of music genres, including big band swing, classic rock and tribute bands. Pet friendly, make sure to keep your dogs on a leash while at the park. El Camino Real Park has more than 18 acres of sport fields, open space, play and picnic areas for the public to enjoy. This park also allows pets on a leash. The Orange Dog Park gives area pet owners their own place to take their furry friends to run free without the restriction of a leash. The park also has separate areas for larger dogs, drinking fountains for your pets and pooper scoopers and bags for public use.
