With its narrow lanes, brick-paved walkways, and historic architecture, Winchester still reflects its colonial roots. Settled in 1640, Winchester's historic district is a step back in time -- only today the brick buildings are filled with elegant boutiques, antique shops, sidewalk cafes, restaurants, and other businesses. Located just eight miles northwest of Downtown Boston, Winchester is a popular location for commuters -- a ride on the "T" only takes about 20 minutes from Winchester Center.
Winchester borders the Middlesex Falls Reservation, a 2,575-acre park that is home to Stone Zoo, Spot Pond, hiking trails, picnic areas, and an off-leash dog park. The park is also a great location for cross-country skiing, fishing, mountain biking, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and horseback riding. On the north end of town, Horn Pond Recreation Area is also great for hiking and bicycling.
