Though Mesa Hills remains a fairly quiet neighborhood, plenty of nightlife can be found nearby. The Black Orchid, located on North Mesa Street, won the 2014 award for best cocktails in the city of El Paso. Decorated with pop art and modern-deco art, this lounge has an energetic and friendly atmosphere. Sit on their outdoor patio and sip on a vintage signature cocktail while enjoying a warm El Paso night. Be sure to order the local favorite cocktail, the Bee's Knees. Most Saturdays nights, The Black Orchid features a local jazz band.

Just a 10-minute drive from Mesa Hills, Little Bit of Texas Dance Club plays modern and classic country music all night long. They serve great drink specials and cover deals for every night of the week. Test out your inner cowboy on a Friday night with a ride on their mechanical bull. Named El Paso's number-one country night spot for the last 3 years, they lay claim to the biggest dance floor in four countries. Little Bit of Texas Dance Club also hosts free line dance lessons every Thursday at 7:30 PM.

Whether your mood calls for local flavor or ethnic cuisine, Mesa Hills provides a plethora of dining options. With just 12 tables, Cafe Italia serves brick-oven-cooked dishes in a casual environment. Bring your own bottle of wine, and try one of their specialty pizzas, then order the locally-loved Nutella calzone for dessert. If you have a craving for Mexican food, stop into Lucy's Mexican Restaurant for a taco that does not disappoint. Every sit-down meal comes with unlimited homemade tortilla chips and salsa, too.


Residents of El Paso began moving to the nearby Mesa Hills area because of its relaxing, scenic beauty. Mesa Hills has experienced rapid growth in recent years with new houses popping up throughout the suburban area.

Less than 2 miles away from Mesa Hills lies the El Paso Museum of Art, which costs nothing to visit. Perched up in the mountains, the museum provides an incredible view of El Paso and surrounding areas. Enjoy one of the outdoor walking tours though the breathtaking gardens, then step inside the museum to see the vast array of exhibits with everything from modern art and photography to Baroque paintings. Be sure to come early and stay late in order to take it all in.


Mesa Hills claims part of El Paso's expansive, affordable public transportation system. To get to the city center, hop on the 205 or the 14. The ride lasts for about 35 minutes, just enough time to get through a chapter or two in a great book or soak up the sunny view of the mountains outside the bus window. A one-day bus pass, valid for 24 hours in all of El Paso and surrounding neighborhoods, costs 3.50. A standard one-way fare costs only 1.50. All buses have bike racks on the front to easily take a bike along on any trip. Some, but not all, streets in Mesa Hills have easily accessible bike lanes.

For a night out, get a safe and sober rides using services such as Lyft and Uber, which typically come about 30 percent cheaper than most city cabs. Both services use an application that can be installed on your mobile phone to get a driver to you in just a few short minutes.


Mesa Hills provides all different types of properties for rent including gated communities, units in small complexes and condos. An updated one bedroom apartment in a complex with an in-ground pool can be rented for around $590. Although the median rent for a one-bedroom costs $838. The cost of living in Mesa Hills hits about 2 percent higher than the cost of living in the city of El Paso. A gallon of gas in Mesa Hills usually costs about 20 percent less than the national average. You can enjoy a cold pint of domestic beer from a local pub for about $2.50.


Mesa Hills has many local shopping establishments. Bring a bag or box to donate, and Savers thrift store gives you 20-percent off your entire purchase. Savers always has large selection of well-organized clothing, including some vintage items, furniture and books.

Fatima Beauty boutique provides salon services, and has cosmetics and beauty products for sale. For the little ones, find unique clothing and fashion accessories at Bella Bambina Boutique. Bella's has party outfits with tutus and hats, custom t-shirts and even holiday clothes. If a special wedding, prom or quinceanera awaits, Bridal Amelia Alvillar can take care of any formal gown needs.

Healthy local foods, bulk foods, and organic groceries can be purchased at Sprouts Farmer's Market. Sprouts also stocks many products for natural cruelty-free body care including soaps, moisturizers and sunscreen. If you need a larger selection of groceries, shop at the chain supermarket, Big 8 Foods. For all other household items, stop by Target off of Sunland Park Drive.


Thunder Canyon Park, located within the Mesa Hills neighborhood, has a large open-space area that primarily provides a serene place to hike. About a mile south of Mesa Hills lies Cresmont Park, which houses playgrounds, picnic tables and soccer fields.

Drive about 20 minutes from the Mesa Hills neighborhood, and explore Franklin Mountains State Park. The Franklin Mountains extend for about 23 miles, making them the largest sustained mountain range in Texas. Camping sites can be reserved by calling the park information line. The sites range in price from $4 per night for a backpacking site to $8 per night for a drive-up site.

The Franklin Mountains State Park and the Franklin Mountains Wilderness Coalition hold the annual Franklin Mountains Poppies Celebration when the poppies bloom in the Spring. The celebration features wildlife demonstrations, nature talks and educational exhibits all for no cost to the public.
