Restaurants

Dining and evening entertainment in Crestmont mainly exists along North Mesa Street and the Sunland Park Mall area. Residents wanting a taste of southern Italy head to Mi Piaci for authentic cuisine prepared by a native Calabrian. This chef-owned inspiration to eat better food serves lunch sandwiches like roast pork with spicy herbs and Asiago cheese. Dinner favorites include the osso bucco, but save room for some spectacular desserts.

Famous for its pancakes, Dog-friendly D’lox offers a sunny patio and spruced-up breakfast and lunch items. Go against the flow and order Jazzy salmon — it’s a lox and spinach omelet with cream cheese and alfalfa sprouts best ordered after a strenuous journey. Brunch stays available until 2 pm at this weekend destination.

Spice up your evening at Thyme Matters, an eatery specializing in modern and upscale cuisine right at home in Crestmont. Southwestern specialties like tortilla and chipotle crusted tilapia can be enjoyed in the outdoor lounge while gazing at the Franklin Mountains.

Among the area’s lively nightlife options, Black Orchid Lounge hosts a cozy and modern atmosphere inspired by the roaring '20s. Guests sip from a selection of vintage cocktails as well as more recent inventions like the mezcalita — a tequila concoction infused with jalapeño and lime juice. This unpretentious spot welcomes jazz acts on Saturday and keeps the volume at a level conducive to conversation.

A host of other eateries and activities sit within walking distance of most of Crestmont at Sunland Park Mall. Entertainment includes Cinemark Movie Bistro El Paso where residents catch the latest out of Hollywood, and another Cinemark theatre lies only a mile up North Mesa Street.

History

Residents of El Paso wanting to live outside the heat and stress of the city have called Crestmont home since the boom of World War II. The relative quiet combined with quick access to the city and its international trade made it a popular choice for Texans involved in manufacturing and other industries in Mexico. The Western art gallery at the International Museum of Art has a broad array of Western-themed works of art, and the El Paso Museum of Art also has a selection of works focusing on the border region.

Transportation

One convenience of living in Crestmont is its proximity to North Mesa Street and quick access to downtown. Also in the area, I-10 has freeway speeds and connecting routes throughout the El Paso area and into Mexico. Most residents drive, but Sunland Park Mall and its cluster of nearby retail isn’t more than a mile from anywhere in the area, making walking feasible for some neighborhood shopping. Almost limitless parking isn’t a surprise in Crestmont’s perch beside the vast Chihuahuan desert and stays free. Uber rides lurk a few smartphone taps away, but your driver may arrive later than in more densely populated parts of town. Other taxi services can be called for, but they don’t usually roam the area looking for fares. The area has safe bike lanes for cyclists, but they don’t stretch all the way into town, and residents often strap their bikes to the racks on city buses for the ride in. You’ll want to get on the number 14 going downtown – it costs just $1.50 and can connect you anywhere in the city.

Cost

Average rent for a one-bedroom residence in the area sits at a lofty $694 - a considerable step above the city average. Residents seeking foothills temperatures and quick commutes willingly pay the premium, and enjoy their elevated view over the Rio Grande floodplain’s conspicuous green ribbon. This premium also exists in the area’s slightly above-average cost of living, with a beer and a meal costing $6 and $10, respectively. Fuel in oil-rich Texas can be wildly cheap, and gas runs about 9 percent less than the national average. Also inexpensive, a ticket downtown or anywhere else in El Paso costs just $1.50 aboard the city's Sun Metro transit system.

Shopping

Area shopping exists mostly at Sunland Park Mall and along North Mesa Street, and the Coffee Emporium is a great way to kick-start your retail therapy. It’s been injecting the area with energizing hand-selected fair trade blends from around the world for over 30 years and also features fudge and other sophisticated snacks.

If flowers are on your list, the professionals at Heaven Sent Florist can make sure you don’t disappoint, and you can get a standard array of potted pleas and petitions to help you make your case. If resolving your predicament requires a bit more precision, grab one of the Zen-themed arrangements with bamboo and attractive purple orchids.

Right at home in the area, Susan Eisen Fine Jewelry and Watches features elegant accessories and baubles at inexpensive prices. Susan designs many of the unique items available in her upscale boutique and takes remarkable pride in the quality of her staff. Jewelry is a way of life at this classy facility that does its metalwork on-site, and the prices range as wide as the selection of trinkets and treasures.

Groceries and household essentials sit close at hand, with Sprouts and Lowe’s both in the area. Just a mile north, Albertson’s and Sam’s Club also serve area residents, and the every Saturday year-round, the Downtown Farmers and Artist Market showcases produce and local artists’ creations.

Parks

Recreation around Crestmont includes everything you would expect from a neighborhood in the foothills of colossal Franklin Mountain State Park, the largest urban park in the country at more than 37 square miles. The wilderness belongs to the State of Texas and is a carefully preserved gem of mountain wilderness clinging to the edge of the high desert. Daily entrance costs $5, and park activities run the gamut from woodland trails to aerial tramways.

A number of other free city parks reside in the city with the high-quality amenities you would expect in this well-heeled area. Paul Harvey Park's pool and climbing structures beckon kids, and the sand in the desert hills of Resker Canyon constantly compacts under jogger’s shoes. Crestmont Park in the center of the area overlooks a view often ranging 40 miles or more.

More great outdoor entertainment lies just to the south every March during the Sunland Derby. This prequalifying race for the Kentucky Derby takes place just south of the state line at the Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.
