Cottage Grove marks the geographic end of the Twin Cities metro area at the southeast corner. Beyond this point, the landscape opens up to a patchwork of semi-rural farms, oak savannah forests, tourist towns and the Mississippi River, which takes a turn to the east just south of the city on its way to meet the St. Croix River and Wisconsin. Although the city has a long history that dates back to the days before Minnesota statehood, this suburb's young population and modern business district give it an air of ambition and growth.
