Long before ski lifts and boutique hotels, this Sierra Nevada crossroads began in 1863 as a roadhouse on the trans-Sierra wagon road, eventually taking the name Truckee in honor of a Paiute leader whose greeting -- roughly translated as 'everything is all right' -- welcomed early crossers of the range.

Historic Downtown preserves that era in its bones: brick buildings dating to the 1860s now house galleries and bars where banks and taverns once stood. Historic Downtown is the heart of Truckee's retail scene, where brick storefronts shelter independent boutiques, art studios, and galleries showcasing work by local artists. The Gateway area on the western stretch of Donner Pass Road shifts toward everyday essentials, including grocers and coffee shops.

Three additional shopping centers -- The Rock, Gateway at Donner Pass, and Westgate Plaza -- sit within nine minutes of the town center and cover most day-to-day needs. The Truckee Farmers Market, held at Truckee River Regional Park from May through October, draws vendors and shoppers looking for locally sourced goods throughout the warmer months.
