The University of Houston – Clear Lake sits in a quiet suburban corner of Houston near Trinity Bay, adjacent to the Johnson Space Center. In fact, the establishment of the NASA facility led directly to UH establishing a Clear Lake campus in 1971, with many NASA employees becoming the school’s first students (the university also boasts many astronauts among its alumni). The relatively small campus features four classroom buildings on the shore of Horsepen Bayou, surrounded by fairly upscale residential neighborhoods. Rental options within walking distance of campus are largely limited to the University Park subdivision, however many affordable apartments, rental houses, and condos can be found within a short drive of the campus. Bay Area Boulevard serves as the major commercial corridor around UHCL, lined with shopping centers and mostly chain restaurants. The nearby Baybrook Mall is huge, and surrounded by eateries specializing in everything from local seafood to Mongolian stir fry. Downtown Houston is only about 45 minutes to the northwest, making it easy to take advantage of the entertainment and resources of the city anytime. And of course, Trinity Bay is practically right next door, providing great opportunities for boating and fishing on the weekends.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
