The University of Pittsburgh, commonly referred to as Pitt, sits just three miles from Downtown Pittsburgh. Founded in 1787, Pitt’s urban campus encourages students to be independent and appreciative of cultural diversity. Pitt is home to the nationally-ranked School of Medicine, School of Education, and Swanson School of Engineering. Alumni have gone on to win Pulitzers, the Nobel Peace Prize, and the MacArthur Prize. The University of Pittsburgh Panthers sports teams participate in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference with exuberant support from the community. The university does not require freshmen to live in on-campus housing. In fact, more than half of the student body lives off campus. With such close proximity to Downtown Pittsburgh, there is plenty to do around Pitt. Free museum visits and cultural event tickets are available through PITT ARTS. The three rivers that surround Pittsburgh offer ample opportunities for fishing and boating. The annual Nationality Rooms Open House is a public event hosted in the iconic Cathedral of Learning, representing a variety of cultures and cuisines.

We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
