The University of Louisville has served as a major intellectual and cultural hub for the state for over two hundred years. Founded in 1798, the historic institution is one of the oldest universities in the United States and the nation’s first city-owned university. Long respected for its superb medical research facilities (Louisville surgeons performed the first successful artificial heart transplant as well as the first successful hand transplant), U of L is also consistently recognized for the high quality of its academic programs across all departments. The Louisville Cardinals athletics program is wildly popular, and home football games at Cardinal Stadium are major events for the whole city. A few blocks north of U of L, Downtown Louisville’s famous attractions are popular after-hours destinations for the campus crowd, including Third Street Dive, Fourth Street Live, and the Mercury Ballroom. Closer to campus, bars like Zanzabar, Magnolia, and Granville Inn are easily within walking distance.
