The Township of Macomb was officially approved by the Legislative Council on March 7, 1834, drawing its name from General Alexander Macomb, a celebrated War of 1812 veteran whose mercantile family held ownership of most of the surrounding county. The earliest settlers were drawn by the flat, fertile farmland along the Clinton River.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the township played a notable role in southeast Michigan's lumber industry.
