In 1981, all but one of the roads connecting the town to A1A were closed to outside traffic, leaving The Strand as the sole entry point, still patrolled by a police guardhouse today. The town's place in popular culture is anchored by a 1974 recording session: Eric Clapton stayed at a home on Ocean Boulevard and made the album that bears that street's address. The closest option is Millennium Plaza, just over a mile away, followed by Aventura Shopping Center and Shoppes of Aventura within three miles. Aventura Mall, the region's major retail destination, covers more than 2.8 million square feet and hosts over 300 stores, with a Publix grocery adjacent to the property.

The absence of in-town retail keeps the streets quiet and the residential feel intact, while the proximity of well-stocked shopping corridors in Aventura means most daily errands stay within a ten-minute drive.
