The land beneath Beach Park has a longer story than its quiet streets suggest. The South Beach section of Illinois Beach State Park was originally Camp Logan, a rifle range developed by the Illinois National Guard in 1892. Through both World War I and World War II, that same ground served as a training range for the nearby Naval Station Great Lakes, leaving behind a legacy that still shapes the landscape today.

The village's name has a more accidental origin. The railroad line connecting Chicago and Milwaukee passed through a transfer point called Beach Depot, but conductors repeatedly called it Beach Park because of the acres of natural land surrounding it. The misidentification eventually became official, and the name has stuck ever since.

Getting around Beach Park means relying primarily on a car. Green Bay Road and Sheridan Road are the two main thoroughfares, with Kenosha Road, Wadsworth Road, Lewis Avenue, and several other streets filling out the local grid. A Pace bus line connects the village to other lakeshore communities with stops along Sheridan Road.

For commuters heading to Chicago, the nearest Metra station is in Zion, about 3.3 miles away, where the UP-North Line runs into the city. Interstate 94 provides highway access in both directions. Chicago O'Hare International Airport is roughly 38 miles away, a drive of about 50 minutes, while Waukegan National Airport sits adjacent to the village but does not offer commercial flights.

Illinois Beach State Park anchors outdoor life in and around Beach Park. Spanning 4,100 acres along seven miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the park shelters more than 650 plant species across wet prairies, sandy ridges, marshes, and black oak forests. Trails wind through all of it, and designated docks serve anglers and boaters while sandy beaches draw swimmers each summer.

Within the village, Founders Park offers playground equipment, sports fields, and walking trails, while Greg Petry SportsPark provides soccer fields and four baseball diamonds for organized play. Thunderhawk Golf Club operates a certified Signature Sanctuary Course that actively protects local flora and fauna on the greens. Just beyond village limits, Lyons Woods lies about three miles away and Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve is reachable in roughly ten minutes, adding more wooded terrain for hiking and exploration.

Rents in Beach Park come in well below the Illinois statewide average, making the village one of the more affordable options in Lake County. One-bedroom apartments average $977 per month and two-bedroom units average $1,078 per month, both notably lower than what comparable units run in nearby Waukegan.

Gurnee and Waukegan serve as the primary shopping destinations for Beach Park residents, given the village's overwhelmingly residential character. Several shopping centers are within minutes of the village, including Delco Plaza of Waukegan, Yorkhouse Center, and Yorkhouse Commons, all reachable in under three minutes by car.

Beach Park has established three Tax Increment Finance districts to encourage retail and business growth closer to home, with two of those districts running along the Green Bay and Sheridan road corridors. As that development continues, the day-to-day retail scene remains a short drive away rather than a walkable part of the village itself.
