Atherton, CA Area Guide

Long before Silicon Valley reshaped the Peninsula, this land was part of Rancho de las Pulgas, a Spanish land grant covering much of present-day San Mateo County. By the 1860s the area was known as Fair Oaks, and it was formally incorporated in 1923 under the name of Faxon Dean Atherton, a trader and landowner with deep ties to the region. The town's character took shape in the 19th century, when San Franciscans enriched by the Gold Rush built sprawling summer estates among the oaks, drawn by the cooler Peninsula air.

Dining out means heading to nearby Downtown Menlo Park, where Santa Cruz Avenue concentrates a strong lineup of restaurants within a short drive. The scene covers Northern Italian, rustic California cuisine built around seasonal ingredients, and French cooking. Every Wednesday, part of the avenue shuts down for Bon Marche, a French-inspired outdoor market featuring food vendors, crafts, and live music that draws a steady crowd from across the area.
