When you need a nearby getaway, head out for local cuisine and to enjoy area nightlife. Mexican, Thai, Greek and American restaurants aim to please Highland Meadows residents. Dining destinations are scattered along Walnut Hill Lane and Plano Road.

Locals travel to Tukta Thai Restaurant for signature dishes such as the gang pa and spring rolls. The curry sticky rice and pad king also remain favorites.

Chubby's Family Restaurant serves breakfast, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, dinners and desserts to satisfy even large appetites. Popular dinner choices include the gyro dinner, plaki grilled haddock and veggie lovers' pasta. Succulent daily specials keep customers coming back to experience new dishes.

After the sun sets in Highland Meadows, locals frequent the sports bars and restaurants that line Plano Road. Take a short drive to Abrams Road to unwind at One Nostalgia Tavern with karaoke and craft beer. Nostalgia opens for happy hour every day from noon to 7 p.m. with $3 domestic beers. Bring your dancing shoes and party at one of Dallas' oldest bars until 2 a.m. every day of the week.

Locals also enjoy fun nights out at Go 4 It Sports Grill. Beer lovers enjoy being able to choose from more than 23 different drafts. Features like Fire & Ice Thursdays or poker Tuesdays diversify entertainment.

Those who enjoy music can drive to Dallas and head to the Granada Theater. Since 1946, the popular venue has thrilled patrons with classics such as "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "My Fair Lady" and "To Kill a Mockingbird," and many performers have graced the theater's stage, including Dolly Parton. Those who don't want to travel too far away from home can visit The Lone Star Roadhouse to enjoy dinner and live music on weekends.


Highland Meadows gained its unique identity in 2006 from the substantial Lake Highlands community. Street names, such as Rolling Rock, Meadowcliff, Longmeadow, Hayfield and Quail Run, reflect the past period of spacious cattle-inhabited fields. Transformation in the area began with the development of subdivisions in the 1950’s. A variety of architectural styles highlight periods of growth throughout the years.

Residents maintain the culture of Highland Meadows. Church groups as well as the Highland Meadows Neighborhood Association help improve the community through volunteerism, charity and environmental outreach. The association’s online message boards and newsletters keep residents informed of local news and activities.

Garage sales, garden shows and pet-themed events pop up frequently in the summer. While museums and art galleries may be missing locally, just outside the community lie the Museum of Biblical Art and Meadows Museum. The Meadows Museum, located in Southern Methodist University, features Spanish Masters from the 15th century.


Citizens of Highland Meadows commonly travel by personal automobile, and residents can get to various locations throughout the town within 15 to 35 minutes. After arriving at your destination, leave your vehicle in local establishments’ parking lots or on residential streets for free. The community also has several other options for more environmentally friendly transportation.

Residents can also call a local taxi cab company or go through Uber to schedule a ride. Some popular taxi companies servicing the area include Cowboy Cab and Alamo Cab. Hiring a ride from Uber may cost $12 to $75, depending on the type of vehicle you desire. For long distance travel, ride the Greyhound Lines or Megabus, or drive down take State Highway 244 or I 635 to visit major cities that are nearby.

Pedestrians can also enjoy traveling around Highland Meadows. Sidewalks make pleasant settings for an evening stroll, and cyclists can use bicycle lanes on residential roads with less traffic.


The cost of living in Highland Meadows hovers slightly lower than the general Dallas area. Home prices sit considerably lower in the neighborhood than in more central city locations. A single-bedroom residence in Highland Meadows typically runs $611. A meals may start at around $8, and a beer at a local pub costs around $5.50.

Both public transportation and driving are also affordable. Gas prices cost 11 percent lower than the national average. Dallas Area Rapid Transit provides a variety of inexpensive routes to locations all over the city.


Highland Meadow shopping consists of minor specialty stores scattered around the area. Quilters Connection carries quilting supplies and a variety of fabric. Good Vapes provides flavored smoking alternatives. Car dealerships like Gateway Buick GMC are abundant in the area. Urban Thrift Store allows locals to shop for vintage or high-end items that are gently used at affordable prices.

Luxury retailers, such as Dior, Jimmy Choo, and Escada, have shops in nearby Highland Park Village. Kroger services the neighborhood’s grocery needs, while the 7-Eleven stocks the basics. Unfortunately, there are no farmer’s market stores in Highland Meadow, but locals can check the neighborhood association’s website for summer market events.


Highland Meadows is home to both Mccree Park and B.B. Owen Park, both suitable for outdoor recreation. Residents can relax and enjoy the scenic views, play a game of tennis or plan a day of fishing at Mccree. The entire family, including the family dog, can spend an afternoon winding the park trails for free.

For some laid back exercise, enjoy the disc golf course at B.B. Owen Park. All 18 holes are par 3, so inexperienced players should not worry. Some holes feature multiple game options. Picnic tables and a basketball courts are also available. B.B. Owen Park frequently hosts Pro Disc Golf Association events, charity tournament events and one round mini tournaments.
