Transparent Rating Score Coming to Your Listing

Published on

Ratings and reviews matter — and not just when consumers are selecting a restaurant or laptop. Over 97 percent of renters say that online ratings and reviews matter when they’re searching for a place to rent, according to the latest renter survey by Apartments.com.

That’s why a new update is coming to Apartments.com: a standalone rating on your listing that shows how your community scores — based exclusively on resident feedback.

This refreshed approach to ratings offers greater transparency to prospective residents and more reputation control for multifamily owners and operators.

What’s changing to the rating on your Apartments.com listing

With the update to Apartments.com ratings, prospective residents will see an average rating that’s based solely on resident feedback. This change is going into effect in late April.

Previously, Apartments.com listings included a blended score that combined resident reviews with the property’s CoStar building rating.

The new standalone rating helps prospective residents understand your online reputation. This clarity avoids the confusion of a blended score and helps boost prospects’ trust and confidence when selecting your community.

Scores will align with what residents are saying about your property, and if your community hasn’t received any ratings yet, your listing will not list a score.

The new approach helps your reputation management strategy pay off. Unlike your building score, which is determined by CoStar researchers based on strict criteria, your online reputation is an asset your community can actively manage by promoting resident satisfaction, soliciting reviews, and addressing resident feedback.

How to position your property for success

What can your property do to stand out? Follow these best practices to give your online reputation a boost:

  • Actively solicit reviews from your residents
  • Share a customized flyer to help residents leave a rating on your Apartments.com listing
  • Respond to residents’ reviews in a thoughtful, timely manner
  • Use feedback to address resident concerns and boost satisfaction

With a strong reputation management strategy, you can help prospects not just find your community but also feel confident about moving in.

As one renter explained in the recent survey, “I’m obviously not expecting perfection, but having more good reviews than bad definitely calms my nervous system.”
