Hillandale begins on the north side of Duke University and includes the Watts Hospital-Hillandale Historic District. This charming area dates back to 1908 and consists of arts and crafts style homes built in the early 1900s. The neighborhood follows Hillandale Road north to Horton Road. The Crossdaile Country Club is on the west side of the neighborhood. Hillandale is a wooded neighborhood filled with parks, hiking trails, and cozy streets lined with charming homes. Its small-town, rural feel belies its proximity to Downtown Durham, just minutes southeast.
Being so close to Duke University, residents have fast access to Duke University Hospital, Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Duke Forest, and the Nasher Museum of Art. On the south end of the neighborhood, the Shops at Erwin Mill is filled with popular shops, restaurants, cafes, and a Whole Foods Market.

Property Ratings at Clairmont at Hillandale
We moved to Clairmont at Hillandale after we sold our house and lived there for a year, we lived in the apartments across the street. Overall the apartment we stayed in was nice, it had laminate flooring and stainless steel appliances. the pool was by far our favorite thing, we spent the majority of our first summer there! Now here are some things that I wasn’t too fond about. Whenever our upstairs neighbor would walk it sounded like something in the ceiling was rattling. It would make the loud popping sound over the kitchen where the light fixture was. Our upstairs neighbor was also very inconsiderate, she would make all kinds of noise late at night while we were trying to sleep. She let her son run in the apartment. He would also throw his toys and socks off the balcony. The trash problem was VERY bad, trash pick up was only once a week and it would get so full that it would stink and blow all over the parking lot. People would come from across the street even though there’s a compactor on their side. Cars would come late at night and drop trash, furniture and other things. People were lazy and would just drop their trash in front of the dumpster. Blocking it so no one else could dump their trash! Security was another issue. People would walk through the parking lot at all hours of the night. There were at least 4 instances where we had someone try to get into our cars. Some of our neighbors sadly had their cars broken into. We lived on the first floor and people would walk behind our apartment, when we told management they basically said that it was public access. Which didn’t sit right with me considering during our first month we had someone try to climb on our balcony. There were multiple lights out throughout the outside of the building, this was an issue our entire lease , and we reported it to maintenance multiple times but nothing was ever done about it. The filter for our AC unit was only changed ONCE while we lived here, we tried to get the filter ourselves but could never find the right size. the deposit check we got back bounced, the check got sent back from their bank as fraud. Since we’ve moved there is an abandoned SUV parked on a Jack in the parking lot.
Well, this community isn't too bad- the apartments are fairly nice (although I think elephants lived upstairs for about 6 months). Pool is good for wading or small children. The garage was fairly big. They are not a big fans of kids (especially if they play in the open areas/not in the small playground located at one site only). When checking out, I was told that I would get my deposit back, however a month after, we received a bill to replace the carpet. It was reported that they found urine throughout the apartment, however this is untrue, as our cat was limited to the living room only and was litter trained. It is appalling that they would say this. Our apartment was spotless and we had the carpet specifically cleaned prior to our departure to avoid any fee. Asked for pictures- have yet to receive them. Advised them that our carpet was dirty upon our initial check in 3 years ago- however they denied this (even though we wrote it on the check-in sheet!). Long story short- if you rent from here with a pet, expect to lose your deposit and pay a few hundred dollars. Thank goodness we don't have to rent from them ever again!
If you are looking here, make sure you get an upstair apt. Anyother floor you will hear the folks up stairs walking, even the pets. The noise on the stairs echos throughout the apt. Patios or balconies floors are not solid so if your neightbors spills or water plants above you, guess what. Your patio will be wet with whatever they spilled above you. Pet noise from running is not covered under the noise condition after hours. Office will not uphold that rule for pets. My opinion is that anybody living below someone with a pet should be compensated. Noise from the highway is very noticeable through the walls and windows. Smoke alarm is so close to the kitchen that boiling water sets off the alarm with the steam, even if the exhaust fan is on. Definitely cannot not broil food without the alarm going off and again with the exhaust fan on. So take the upstairs apartment if you can, anyother, get ear plugs.
I am a current resident. This place is a great value. The price for the amount of space and quality of staff and amenities is hard to beat. You have convenient access to 85 and 147. Only about 5 mins from downtown. I have plenty of storage and closet space which was really important to me. The staff is super helpful, maintenance is very prompt. I honestly don't have anything bad to say. ONLY way it could be better is if I could have the same amount of space for the same price but in downtown :)
