Chatsworth holds a position as one of the more relaxed neighborhoods in Los Angeles, with a strong sense of community and access to several outdoor hot spots. The scenic trails and beautiful views make nature lovers feel right at home, but the area also includes a high-quality school system and varied employment options.

Immediately south of California State Route 118, Chatsworth sits about 37 miles from downtown. You have access to all of Los Angeles, with a home secluded enough to get away from it all.

Restaurants

The restaurant scene in Chatsworth has a bit of everything, from all-American barbecue to exotic international cuisine.

Travelers and residents alike should check out Caprese Restaurant, conveniently located at the Radisson Hotel. This large Italian restaurant has a modern decor and a quiet, intimate ambiance despite its size. The amicable staff takes good care of every diner, and the portions tend to be generous. Italian food lovers should definitely try the bruschetta.

If you enjoy Vietnamese food at a low price, check out Cafe Orient. It puts a modern twist on classic Vietnamese and Thai dishes by blending them with French and Chinese colonial flavors. Order the pineapple fried rice for a healthy, unique flavor combination.

Visit Cookin' with Lenny Smokehouse whether you like your meat barbecued or Cajun style. The exterior looks like a classic smokehouse, and once you get inside you'll experience a festive atmosphere perfect for having a good time. You can't go wrong with the whiskey glazed ribs, but Lenny has plenty of choices for everyone. If you don't feel like meat, try the amazing mac and cheese sandwich.

As far as nightlife goes, the neighborhood doesn't have a big club scene like nearby areas. Instead, you'll find a selection of relaxed local bars, with a couple of high-energy options available too. If you feel like getting crazy but want to avoid the typical nightclub, head over to the Cowboy Palace Saloon. Live country music plays every night, and you can even learn to dance here. Country music fans may recognize the saloon from a Toby Keith music video.

History

First inhabited by Native Americans, Chatsworth later changed possession multiple times, from Spain to Mexico and then the United States. A railroad brought expansion to the neighborhood in 1893, and Chatsworth became part of Los Angeles in 1915. A post-World War II population boom affected the entire San Fernando Valley, including Chatsworth.

The community takes pride in its history, which you can witness firsthand at Valley Relics Museum. The museum collects artifacts from the Valley, including documents, photos and art. Make sure to check out the back room, as it includes large neon signs for landmarks both past and present.

Transportation

Whether you plan to drive, take the bus or bike, you have plenty of options to travel around this neighborhood.

Local roads that don't see too much congestion, except occasionally during rush hour, make it easy to travel around this neighborhood. California State Route 118, running west and east across the Valley, lies on the north side of Chatsworth. California State Route 27, also known as Topanga Canyon Boulevard, can be taken south. You can park on the street; just read the posted signs to avoid a ticket.

Residents have plenty of public transportation options, particularly at the Chatsworth Station. You can take the Los Angeles Metro and the Metro Orange Line from the station. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train also stops at the station, if you want to take a longer trip. Taxis and rideshare companies like Uber service the area. Pick-up times vary.

You can walk or bike around Chatsworth, and many streets have bike lanes. The neighborhood does tend to be spread out, so it will be most convenient if you have a car.

Cost

The neighborhood carries a reasonable cost of living compared to the rest of Los Angeles. The cost of leasing apartments or houses can be affordable. A one-bedroom apartment typically costs around $1,246, although you may find cheaper arrangements.

A Metro ride to the city center costs $1.75, and gas prices come in around 13 percent higher than the national average. A pint at the local pub costs around $5.

Shopping

The shopping experience includes an even mixture of large, trusted brands and small, independent shops.

The neighborhood doesn't have a central shopping location, although you can get to the Northridge Fashion Center quickly from this neighborhood when you feel like a day at the mall. For a more personal shopping experience, check out Tru Luxury Boutique. Located right off Topanga Canyon Boulevard, the friendly staff and owner will be happy to help you pick out the latest fashions. Tru Luxury stocks a variety of unique clothes that will keep you in style without breaking the bank. Outdoors types should visit Safari Surf and Sport, a surf shop on Devonshire. Whether you just started or you've been surfing for years, you'll be welcomed here. Make sure to ask about the annual surf board swap meet, which features live music and food stands.

For grocery shopping, Chatsworth houses Ralphs, Vons, Trader Joe's and several smaller markets. Those who prefer natural foods can check out the Chatsworth Farmers Market, open every Saturday morning and afternoon. The open-air market has certified organic produce, cheeses and other foods. More than just a food market, it also has arts and crafts merchandise and even live entertainment to keep the mood light.

Parks

With several parks located throughout the neighborhood, residents have every opportunity to spend time outdoors.

For an old-school place to hike with your friends or loved ones, visit Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park. The park includes paths for running, walking and biking, each one providing spectacular views of the Valley. Your workout will vary depending on which trail you choose, but many feature steep inclines, perfect for burning extra calories. If you have dogs, bring them along, because they'll love the open space and the chance to run.

Mason Park and Recreation Center has baseball diamonds, soccer fields and even a water park, making it ideal for both kids and adults. Go during the week if you want to use the facilities without worrying about a crowd, as it gets packed on weekends. Check it out on weekends when you're in a festive mood; there will usually be several parties taking place and sometimes even a mariachi band.
