Restaurants

In the JFK Park-South Jackson area, diners find most of the restaurants near the intersection of High Point Terrace and Summer Avenue. The offerings include restaurants serving up Southern favorites such as biscuits and gravy next to ethnic eateries serving everything from sushi to crab rangoon to fish tacos.

For a stunning breakfast, check out Bryant's Breakfast. This shop makes their biscuits and pancakes from scratch, but locals rave about the country ham and the sweet sides, such as cinnamon bread.

Elwood Shack, an unassuming restaurant with simple wooden picnic tables on its patio, serves hearty deli sandwiches for locals who crave something filling. Try the citrus smoked salmon with capers on an everything bagel or a pulled pork sandwich with jalapeno coleslaw. For a light snack, try the trout tacos or the jerk wings.

In the evenings, locals head to dive bars and sports pubs. With awards as one of the best dive bars in the metro area, The High Point Pub has cheap beer, a welcoming crowd of regulars, a real jukebox and table shuffle board. If you want to hear live music or have a bit more upscale experience, check out the Cove.

Situated between downtown and the JFK Park-South Jackson neighborhood, The Cove serves cocktails and oysters. They also host live music nights and special film screenings. While large dance clubs do not exist in the JFK Park-South Jackson area, revelers can journey into downtown to line dance at clubs such as the Electric Cowboy.

History

For 10,000 years, native tribes roamed the area, and European settlers first penetrated it in 1541. In 1818, after centuries of pressure from Europeans, the local Chickasaws relinquished the area's land, and settlers began erecting farms, shops, churches and hotels.

Cotton became the epicenter of the area's economic base, but its growth depended on slave labor. As a result, Memphis along with Tennessee succeeded from the union during the Civil War. In 1862, General Grant defeated the Confederate Army and claimed the city as a Union headquarters.

After the war, yellow fever plagued the city, infecting 80 percent of its residents and killing 20 percent. One hundred years later, Memphis, its citizens locked in a struggle for civil rights, became the site of Martin Luther King Jr's assassination.

Full of arts and culture, the surrounding area hosts the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, and the Delta Fair and Music Festival.

Transportation

In the JFK Park South-Jackson neighborhood, you can park your car for free on most residential streets, and expansive parking lots flank most of the area businesses. Sam Cooper Boulevard conveniently links the two areas for drivers, and bus routes also run along this road.

On Sam Cooper, buses run every 40 minutes on Mondays through Fridays, and the journey into downtown takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Along the parallel road, Highway-14, buses run into downtown every half an hour on weekdays.

The bicyclist culture is growing in Memphis, and riders can cycle from the JFK Park South-Jackson neighborhood into downtown on a safe, dedicated bicycle path. The stores sit too far from the residential parts of the neighborhood for the area to be considered walkable, but walkers find the area safe.

Cabs and Uber cars operate in the area. Relatively elusive, they cannot usually be hailed in the street. Instead, riders should call to arrange a ride.

Cost

The cost of living in the JFK Park-South Jackson neighborhood sits slightly less than the average cost of living in the Memphis area. In Memphis, the average one-bedroom apartment rents for $656, but in JFK Park-South Jackson, the lower real estate value in the area brings the average price of rent to even lower than the metro average.

Drinkers can pop into a neighborhood pub and grab a pint of beer for only $3, but craft beers typically carry price tags ranging up to $6. Taking the bus into the city center costs between 85 cents and $3, depending on the rider's eligibility for senior and student discounts, and the time of day. Gas stations in this area charge of an average of 12 percent less than the national average for a gallon of gas.

Shopping

The shops on Summer Avenue include thrift stores, discount stores such a Big Lots and a few small locally owned shops, such as Amy's Golden Strand, and Shoes, Boots and Moore. At Amy's, shoppers find the perfect canvases and threads for their next fiber masterpieces, or they browse the bookshelves looking for inspiration. This small shop also hosts embroidery and other types of handiwork classes. At Shoes, Boots and Moore, shoppers have their choice of an eclectic array of wild shoes. The store stocks everything from colorful cowboy boots to vintage platform boots. It also carries wigs, tutus, used-car salesmen jackets and other essentials. JFK Park-South Jackson locals buy groceries at chains such as Kroger, but the neighborhood also hosts small specialty shops such as The Park and Shop Oriental Market. In the summer, a farmer's market takes place near the Botanic Gardens.

Parks

The area's namesake, John F. Kennedy Park houses 260 acres of outdoor fun. Watch a game at the softball or baseball fields, take a hike through the nature trails, enjoy a picnic at one of the pavilions, or let the kids burn off energy at the playground.

Dog owners and those craving a dose of nature head to Overton Park. This spacious parks sits adjacent to the zoo and the art museum, and people often fly kites in its green expanse. Dogs, in particular, love Overton's off-leash area. During the summer, enjoy free concerts at the Levitt Shell bandstand in this park.
