Sunny and spacious West End apartment
Well, that's what the ad said. And to its credit, the apartment is spacious and (pretty) sunny. If they hadn't put drop ceilings in half of it, it would be even more spacious, but compared to our neighbors upstairs and even with other friends in Portland, we've got a pretty big space. Not to mention that the area is incredible. Portland's West End is a beautiful, green neighborhood complete with excellent restaurants and bars. Once a residential borough with large brick single-family homes and sprawling yards, it's slowly turned into a 'downtown' neighborhood, adjacent to Portland's arts district and the Old Port. Our house was once-- I imagine-- inhabited by a big family. It's now four apartments, with ours occupying the first floor. Our place has a lot of character, some came with the apartment and some we added ourselves. But it's also lacking. We've got no backyard to speak of, no real green space on our lot, and this old house has become a fixer-upper over the years. Faucets leak, pipes break, and as the walls constrict in the winter you start to see the clapboard through the gaps (meaning it gets very cold for us from about November through April).
