In 1811 Jonathan Scholfield purchased this quarter block from the widow of Henry Piercy, a Revolutionary officer who came to Alexandria from Philadelphia after the Revolution. In 1792 he advertised pottery from “Northen Ware Manufactory,” a stone building on this quarter block. A substantial amount of Pierce’s pottery has been retrieved from a waste pit at the rear of 220. In 1812 Schofield built a row of three two-story and five three-story brick houses (the end house faces to Duke. Only one two-story house still stands, 220, bought by Judge William Cranch in 1817. He lived there until 1821. Cranch was appointed an Assistant Judge of the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of Columbia in 1801, and Chief Judge, in 1806. Described as “a man of perfectly old fashioned New England manners.” Cranch was a nephew of Abigail Adams, and the great-grandfather of T.S. Eliot, the poet and critic. John Lloyd bought Scholfield’s houses at public auction in 1816. The five three-story houses remained in the Lloyd family for many years.

Old Town sits across from Washington DC, along the Potomac River in Alexandria. Founded in 1749, the old charm of the neighborhood lives on in converted Colonial-era buildings which now house modern conveniences. Along Old Town’s cobblestone streets, you’ll discover an array of independent boutiques, artisan shops, wine bars, and farm-to-fork restaurants.
The farmers market in Market Square is your place for fresh cut flowers, hand-dipped candles, and made-from-scratch baked goods. The plaza is more than 250 years old - George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate was a regular vendor back in the day!
King Street is not only dotted with eateries and shops, but also nightlife and live jazz! The iconic Gadsby’s Tavern on North Royal Street fed many early presidents and continues to run as a restaurant - but also as a museum! King Street and Waterfront Parks provide residents recreational and boating opportunities along the river.
