Retro-seekers head to the antique and record shops of West 19th Street, also home of the classic Heights Theater and the monthly First Saturday Arts Market. The Heights hike-and-bike trail follows a leafy path all the way to Downtown Houston. While there's no official walking tour of the Heights, visitors can park along 19th Street near Heights Boulevard, then walk down to White Oak Drive along Heights Boulevard, where all along the street there are homes, restaurants, bars and shops to explore. The Heights neighborhood runs from I-10 and goes up to 610. East-west streets are numbered, while north-south streets are named after historic colleges. Both sides of Heights Boulevard are separated by a spacious greenway full of mature, shade-giving trees that offer great walking trails other than the sidewalks. Along that hike and bike trail, there are sculptures, placards and memorials to offer insight into the history of the neighborhood. Heights residents are house-proud and take decorating their homes for every occasion seriously—whether it's Christmas, Mardi Gras, Fourth of July or just an abundance of foliage in their gardens—so there is plenty to see.
