Finding Apartments for Rent in Tacoma, WA

Tacoma is a large city. As with most large cities, it has a lot of different options when it comes to apartments for rent. You can find virtually any type of apartment you need, and there are always vacancies in almost all types of apartment housing as people move into and out of the city for work. You'll find private homes that have converted room or entire floors into apartments, a wide variety of apartment communities that range from young professional to family-oriented, to luxurious high rise lofts and penthouses. Some communities are gated and guarded, and others are pet-friendly or have playgrounds for children. You are almost guaranteed to find the perfect apartment in the ideal area and within your budget any time you look in Tacoma.

    Top Neighborhoods in Tacoma, WA

Some of the top neighborhoods in Tacoma include:

    • Hilltop--This neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is close to the Tacoma Public Library. While it had a drug and gang problem a couple of decades ago, the area has recently undergone an extensive cleanup, and is now one of the better neighborhoods in the city. You will find easy access to a lot of the city's amenities here, as well as lovely historic single family homes. People here tend to know their neighbors, and they look out for each other. It is a wonderful neighborhood for kids to play in and make friends.
    • Downtown--Downtown Tacoma is a paradise for those who love culture and the theater. It has separate museum and theater districts, and has undergone extensive renovations in recent years that make it perfect for people who prefer urban dwelling. Anything you could need is within walking distance in the downtown area, and there is always something interesting going on. This area is attracting a lot of young professionals who are single and just out of college. Some business executives and upper income families also choose to make downtown their home.
    • East Tacoma--Perfect for those who don't want to live in the middle of downtown, but who want to be close to it, East Tacoma is a lovely little residential area with middle income families located throughout it. There are lots of children here, and the neighborhood is known for its relative safety, especially when compared to some other, rougher parts of town. There is easy access to the highways from here, too, so commuters who work outside of Tacoma won't have to fight downtown traffic to get where they're going. It's an up and coming neighborhood, and housing prices are reasonable there.

    Cultural Attractions in Tacoma, WA

Tacoma offers a variety of interesting cultural attractions. Among these are:

    • The Museum of Glass--Dedicated to glass and the history of glass making, this museum boasts some impressive artifacts from all eras of the glass making industry. The building itself is made largely of glass and is very impressive to behold.
    • America's Car Museum--This newer museum holds an impressive collection of rare automobiles that were all once in the hands of a private collector. There are typically 500 cars on display at any given time, but the museum has many more cars, so it rotates the displays periodically.
    • Tacoma Art Museum--A museum of modern, historic, and local art that is sure to please everyone who considers themselves art lovers, this museum is part of the city's "museum district," that also includes the Museum of Glass and the Washington State History Museum.
    • Washington State History Museum--This is a typical state history museum that is sure to enthrall anyone who has an interest in the history of this state. With artifacts ranging from Native Americans from before the European settlement to the early 20th century, this museum tells the story of Washington with real objects from its varied and fascinating past.
    • Broadway Center for the Performing Arts--This is Tacoma's primary performing arts center. Big name theater and music acts (as well as a few comedians) from across the country come here regularly to perform.
    • The Tacoma Farmer's Market--This popular market of locally grown produce handmade crafts from local artisans draws a huge crowd when it is open. You can visit it every Thursday from May through September, and will likely come home with a huge bag of goodies that are also good for you each time.

    Transportation Options in Tacoma, WA

Pierce Transit provides public bus service in Tacoma, and the buses run throughout the city, well into the evening. Sound Transit provides weekday commuter rail transportation to Seattle and back. Sound Transit also runs the Tacoma Link light rail that provides rail transportation around the city. Greyhound and Amtrak both have stations in the city for people traveling to points outside of it. While Tacoma is a very progressive place with regards to public transportation, and is embracing greener options for using it, the city remains primarily a place where people get around by car.

    Weather in Tacoma, WA

Tacoma has a Mediterranean climate. This is good news for anyone living there, as this means relatively mild temperatures year round. It rarely gets too hot or too cold in Tacoma. There is usually a pleasant breeze, and temperatures are nice enough to keep your windows open and enjoy outdoor activities most of the time. Rainfall is reasonable, too, with an average of about 39 inches a year. This is enough to keep the vegetation nice and lush, without everything getting over-saturated.
