For those who are old enough to remember, Papillon was a famous movie starring the late Steve McQueen portraying the true story of escaped French prisoner, Henri Charriere. The name will ring bells for the old Hollywood movie, but the town of Papillion, Nebraska is not only spelled different, it has nothing to do with a French island prison either. Instead, the town of Papillion is home to over 19,000 residents, sharing a railroad network that has been around since the 1870s with five counties adjacent to Omaha, Nebraska.
The name of the town, of course, is not a typical Midwestern moniker. Instead, it comes from the French word for butterfly. That background hints at the early settlers who first came through the area and decided to create an early community; they were French trappers making a business off of the wildlife in the area and trading furs to buyers back east. However, the official establishment of Papillion occurred later in 1870, at least according to the town’s official seal and stamp.
