Living in Wynnewood

Choose lunch or dinner at select upscale or casual eateries along 135th Street just south of Wynnewood. This exclusively residential neighborhood itself has no bars, clubs or nightlife. A few bars dot the landscape nearby, and some restaurants feature happy hour specials along with live jazz. For unique night-time entertainment, Pinstripes has bowling, bocce, bistro food and drinks. Chefs at Gaslight Grill create traditional American fare with the panache of a gourmet. Come for Sunday brunch, dinner or happy hour at the bar to chill with your friends. Live jazz happens every Wednesday through Sunday evening in the Back Room. Enjoy the beef spiedini for an appetizer as beef tenderloin comes dusted with bread-crumb Asiago cheese and a tomato relish on the side. The gumbo here contains shrimp, hearty sausage, chicken and rice. For the main course, order steak any way you want it, or try seven different seafood entrees. Sunday's prime rib dinner represents the special of the house served with sour cream and chive potato puree and grilled asparagus. Newport Grill features Sunday brunch to go along with upscale American cuisine. Attentive, knowledgeable servers bring food and drinks to your table. For a dinner appetizer, dive into the coconut, crab and spinach dip loaded with blue crab meat and served alongside crostini and spicy chips. Oysters from Massachusetts and Canada represent the specialty of the house here, and these bivalves complement other fish dishes such as mahi mahi, sea bass, Mediterranean bronzini and Atlantic swordfish. Salty Iguana creates several Mexican favorites with homemade flour or wheat tortillas. The Iggy's Hot Pot has beef, pork, chicken and shrimp grilled in pico de gallo and hot sauce simmered in beef broth and served over rice. Spinach enchiladas come with blue-corn wraps, spinach, pepper Jack cheese and verde sauce on top. The simple yet savory cream-cheese enchilada presents a unique dinner, with chicken and cream cheese inside along with jalapeño cream-cheese sauce on the outside. Talk of the Town Grill & Bar serves as Wynnewood's nearest bar-type establishment. The classy joint has breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings. Try the pulled pork sliders or coleslaw for an appetizer before downing a sandwich, steak or burger. The signature sandwich of the house has prime rib, turkey, melted cheese, standard vegetable fixings and honey mustard on sourdough. The huge sandwich also has fries and slaw in the mix. Sit and relax after a long day of work in this casual yet upscale bar.

Wynnewood marks a newer development in Overland Park and does not have much history. Nearby Nicklaus Golf Club at Lionsgate opened for competition in 2001, and Wynnewood serves as a contemporary housing area built to supplement the championship golf course across the street. Upscale shops came a few years later to complement the newer homes and the vaunted golf course. Museum at Prairiefire was built in 2010 as part of the Prairiefire shopping complex. Sponsored in part by the American Museum of Natural History, the venue brings world-class traveling displays to the area. Classes, displays and events at the museum mark the closest thing to an arts scene near the neighborhood. Nicklaus Golf Club at Lionsgate, just south of Wynnewood, hosts an annual Nationwide Tour golf tournament. The championship golf course puts professional golfers to the test every August at the Midwest Classic.

Every street in Wynnewood has a sidewalk, so feel free to stretch your legs day or night. Side streets allow access for bicycles. Both 133rd and 135th have dedicated bike lanes for several blocks. Shopping centers have plenty of public parking. If you need a cab, call one of a few taxi cabs that service Overland Park. Take 135th to the west to access Highway 69 north to reach Kansas City. Nall Avenue takes you north into Overland Park. Johnson County Transit buses do not make it this far south. One of the closest stops occurs at 107th and Nall, several miles north of Wynnewood.

Living costs much more in Wynnewood than in downtown Kansas City due to high property prices, more expensive utilities and higher-end shopping. A one-bedroom apartment runs you approximately $841 per month. A pint of beer costs $3 at local watering holes during happy hour specials. A one-way fare on a JO bus goes for $2.25. A gallon of gas typically costs 15 percent lower than the national average.

Several high-end retailers exist just southwest of Wynnewood in the Prairiefire shopping center. Price Chopper, just to the east, provides the closest grocery store for your everyday needs. Buy fresh vegetables during warm summer months several miles to the north at the Overland Park Farmers Market. Fat Brain Toys, in Prairiefire, has educational toys for children of all ages from newborn to adult. This unique store lets you try games and products before you buy them. If you cannot find an item in the store, clerks can have one of 7,000 products in-house the next day. Get your gift wrapped, for free, all year instead of just for winter holiday gifts. Threshing Bee contains six local boutiques under one roof. Find one-of-a-kind fashions from local designers, new fashion houses and high-end labels not found in generic department stores. Have a special event in Threshing Bee's private dining room or outdoor deck to celebrate a wedding, birthday, charity event, or bridal shower with a fashion-themed party or show.

The closest public park to the neighborhood remains Beth Torah Park to the north. Take a short walk on a trail through 12 acres of woods. Nearby Nottingham Downs Park contains a playground for kids, picnic tables for Saturday afternoon lunch and a bike-hike trail for exercise. Windham Creek Park contains a lush nature preserve along with a 1-mile trail. Bring your leashed pooch to give your canine companion some fresh air. The Tomahawk Creek Trail follows along the northern edge of Deer Creek Golf Club. This path gives hikers and bikers a good workout along mostly flat terrain. These parks do not have any annual events. Most periodic outdoor events occur at the nearby golf courses. Downtown Overland Park has several historic festivals to enjoy during warmer months at Santa Fe Park, such as the Overland Park Fall Festival and Music in the Park.
