Crest Hill is a city in Will County, Illinois, that carved out its own identity in 1960 when residents voted to incorporate rather than be absorbed by neighboring Joliet. Spanning about 10 square miles along the Des Plaines River, roughly 40 miles southwest of Chicago, the city offers a quieter pace without sacrificing access to the wider metro area. Lewis University in Romeoville and the University of St. Francis in Joliet are both within minutes of the city, giving the area a steady educational presence. One of Crest Hill's most remarkable distinctions is that one of its neighborhoods, originally called Stern Park Gardens, renamed itself Lidice in 1942 to honor a Czech village destroyed during World War II, a tribute so meaningful that both a former U.S. presidential candidate and a Czechoslovak president-in-exile attended the dedication.
